Never ran across an angler that didn’t have their favourite bait or lure and not just one but a few for each species they fish for. Spinnerbaits for bass has to be my all time favourite lure for so many reasons, the main reason being, they catch fish just about anywhere anytime.
Fish Finder
I can tell you that I catch more largemouth bass on spinnerbaits then any other lure I use; it covers water so fast. This is such a great rig for looking for active fish and the damn thing will go just about anywhere you can cast it.
When I get into a shallow water condition or entering a shallow bay it is a no brainier for me, the spinnerbait is my choice.
I call it my fish finder because it will find active fish just waiting to pounce on anything that comes its way. When starting to look for fish I start by fan casting the bait around the front of the boat making sure I cover as much water as possible, not just my target area but the whole spectrum. Many times as you make the cast away from your main focus, wham ole bucket-mouth smashes your lure.
Nothing fancy to this technique cast it out and reel it back to the boat, easy as that. Now I do like to play with my depths a bit when trying to find active fish, holding the rod high and reeling at a good speed will keep the blades turning at the surface. To give it more depth I just slow my retrieve a bit and lower my rod tip and it will run deeper. Try letting it roll down a weed edge, or letting it roll down the side of a log, start it stop it, this lure is so much fun, use your imagination and come up with something different.
Versatile
Not only is it a great lure for finding active fish in the shallows but it can be use in a variety of ways in deeper water, I like to skip it along the bottom in deepwater jigging it up and down as you bring it back to the boat, rip it through deep weeds, it can be just deadly or let it fall of an edge slowly, this can just drive fish nuts. Put a tail on the spinnerbait use a stinger hook for short striking bass, wow this bait just keeps on giving.
Top-water, bottom fishing and anywhere in-between the spinnerbait can go where no lure can. Cast it out and let it sink for a few seconds (countdown a few seconds to reach a certain depth, add a few more seconds for a different depth) and again simply jig it up and down while reeling it back to the boat, jig let it fall reel it back and repeat (a bouncing effect). This is a great way to chase largemouth bass down when they are suspending in deeper water, can kill for smallmouth also.
So what is your favourite bait is it a spinnerbait for bass or maybe a crankbait for walleye, an oversized mepps for musky perhaps, it never fails every person that fishes seems to have their favourite lure.
So what is your favourite lure…?
I agree Tim. I just finished a 5 day fishing trip to Lake of the Woods and a spinner bait was my go to bait.
Yeah they are really a versatile lure and the best thing is they catch fish, all species too, ok maybe not trout or salmon but the rest of them sure will hit this bait.....how was the trip...?
The trip was great. I caught pike, smallmouth bass and walleye on the spinner baits
