My father and grandfather were the ones that first introduced me to fishing when I was just a youngster. What a great way to connect with nature and all of its wonders. From then on, all I wanted was for someone to take me fishing.
That sealed a long and fruitful passion for me that I have kept all of my life. I will forever be missing the ones that introduced me my life’s passion, one day we will fish together again.
Fishing for me is more than just going out to catch fish and have a fish fry, much more. It is the ambiance of the surrounding countryside, the smell of the pines blowing in the wind. Just like the hawk flying overhead looking for his next meal, with laser type precision.
Getting in tune with nature, something I am afraid society has left behind in so many ways. Getting out on the lake in the morning just as the fog lifts off the lake, a spectacular site to see, it really is. Running down the lake to your favourite fishing hole, (I am not telling) with anticipation of the hunt, then outwitting the tasty morsels below.
It all holds very special meaning for me as it has taken me to so many new heights, the sensation I feel when I am out fishing is like no other I have ever felt. I am at peace with nature, in tune if you will, and myself tying life together.
Some ask what the meaning of life is, for me it is nature and all of its wonders and dangers, the 300-year-old trees in the forest, the old fishing cabin that stands on the lake for what seems to be an eternity. The peacefulness of the running stream and the sound of fish jumping, the sound of the water falls against the rocks.
Without my father and grandfather taking me fishing, what would I have become, just another city dweller I guess wondering where my food actually comes from. Not ever being able to get close to nature as I do, not being able to appreciate nature the way I do and of course no one to take me fishing.
That would have set my life on another path, the road not taken, but for me it opened up a completely new world to explore and grow.
As you see it is not just the fishing for me, it is so much more. Next time your child or grandchild say take me fishing dad remember it is more than just fishing it is so much more than that.
It is nice to remeber the days gone past that meant so much to you....thanks Shawn
Fantastic article! Brought to mind all those times fishing with my dad on lake O'Sullivan. Well, camping too, even though it was only 5 minutes from the house! Thanks for a great article. And the stroll down memory lane!
Nothing like about thinking of those fond memories spent with loved ones out getting intouch camping and fishing and even if it is only 5 minutes from the house...it is all about being there with him or her...thanks for the comment McK

This reminds me of a time when I was very young and fresh water fishing once with my Dad. The water was crystal clear and there was clearly no fish in the water. He nonetheless kept casting into the creek as if a fish would appear out of nowhere and take the bait. I remarked, "Dad, there are no fish in here." He simply replied, "I know." I then realized that it meant more to him that we were communing with nature and got a new perspective on my Dad. Thanks for helping me recall this memory.

Thanks for the article of encouragement.. back to nature.. the appreciation of nature... lessons taught by the older generations, giving good memories of days gone by.. wonderful times. How nice it is to have such memories instead of the city and only the city.. great article, one I can attest too.
