What Are Good Baits for Catching Bass?

My choices for good baits for catching bass.

One of my favorite pastimes is fishing for bass. Over the years I've narrowed my selection down to just a handful of lured choices that have constantly helped me catch bass. I learned by trial and error what were some of the better baits for catching bass and how to use them. In this article I'll discuss some of my top choices.

One of my favorite baits for catching bass are lead head jigs. Some believe this is a hard bait to fish but for me it is one of the easier baits to use. It is very strong, durable, and you generally are using heavier line. You will be fishing these baits in heavy cover so strong line and equipment is a must. These baits somewhat imitate a crawfish which one of their preferred foods. There are many color combinations but a good choice to start are black and blue jigs. I personally like a black/brown/amber jig and probably use that color most of the time. You will generally add a crawfish imitation trailer to the bait somewhat matching the color to the jig you are using. I've caught bass over 10 pounds on these type baits.

Another great addition to your tackle box are an assortment of plastic worms. Would you believe when these baits were first produced for fishing some tried to outlaw the lure. That effort off course failed and these lures have turned into one of the most popular baits for catching bass on the market today. These lures are produced on a world of colors and styles but if you stay with a few basic colors you should be fine. My favorite colors in these type lures are junebug, watermellon/red, red shad, and black and blue. My largest catch on these type lures was a nice 11.18 pound bass.

Finally we come to the crank bait family of lures and these are also great baits for catching bass. It really depends on conditions as too which to use. They are all excellent choices. These type baits will include minnow type baits, lipless crank baits, crank baits with different size bill, and spinners. One of my favorites in these type baits is called a Rattletrap produce by Bill Lewis baits. I've probably caught more fish on that one bait than nearly all the other type baits combined. Get one in chrome/blueback and you can't go wrong. These baits get there name as you usually just toss them out and reel (crank) them back in. You can add little twitched and jerks to give them more action. I've caught many 6-7 pound and smaller fish on these type baits.

Those are my best choices of baits for catching bass. What I use will depend largely on the time of year and conditions at the time. During the colder winter months I'll use jigs and plastic baits more than the others. As conditions warm bass will become more active so baits in the crank bait family of lures may be the better choice. This is something you will learn the more time you spend on the water.

Hopefully I have given you some good ideas on what choices you make with you go to the lake bass fishing. The best advice I can give is use the techniques you like the most. Then narrow your bait selection to fit your style of fishing. Just like me, through trial and error, you will learn the technique you like to use the most and find those good baits for catching bass to fit your style of fishing.

You can learn a little more about the baits that catch those big hawgs in my blog. It may not be what your think.

Just found this site. Very informative! I hve really gotten into bass fishing lately, and my luck has dwindled substancially as the weather has gotten colder, although I have read that you can do well also in the fall. 3 weeks ago here in Michigan I caught 5 bass at a nearby lake that people say there isn't many fish. 4 were small, and the 5th was around 4 lbs. I caught all of them on a purple sparkly texas rigged worm about, 6 inches long. Ever since that day I have caught nothing, and have tried quite a bit of different fishing tackle. the latest thing I have read about fall bass fishing, is too reel in more slowly because as the water grows colder the fish grow more sluggish, and don't want to expend too much energy too go after food. I am going to try this next time out.

Exactly Cynthia...confidence is the biggest factor in bass fishing.....most everyone has a number of lures they have the most confidence in...and rarely are they the same between any two anglers.....

Hey Kevin..Always like to hear your choices for the big bass. The flippin jig can get into real heavy cover and tip with the right trailer can just kill at times.....and who can argue about crankbaits they co\ver water fast and on a windy waving lake may be the best way to fish with having all kinds of cranks that go from the surface to the bottom pending the lip....then of course plastic, you mention worms and of course deadly but the rest of the plastics on the market to day go way past just the worm....every shape and colour imaginalbe....one bait you did not mention and is a must for me just about anywhere I fish for bass is a spinner bait with variation on blades and weights and skirts...always one rod with a spinner bait attached.....it is all good Kevin fishing anytime anywhere....it is all about having fun....and of course I love the hunt....thats my take....

Hi Tim...actually should have gone into a little more details on spinners...very versatile bait fished at any debth from top to bottom...My favorite is a 1/2 oz. Terminator Spinner, white with double willow leaf blades and tipped with a twin tail grub as trailer... has saved the day on many of my tournaments...Thanks for stopping by Tim..

Got any advice on catching fish in the ocean? I live on a teeny, tiny tropical island. We don't have lakes. But I've got a great big ocean.

Hi Dr. Becky...I'd just about bet if you put some shrimp, squid, or other cut bait on a hook and enough weight to take it to the bottom you are going to catch something....Thanks for visiting...

I use to love using crank baits to catch large mouth bass. Haven't been fishing in a long time though, definitely something I should get back into. Plus, I'm inclined to believe any advice you give judging by all the pictures you have holding great catches!

Lead head jigs and plastic worms?! The mind boggles Kevin! My dad fishes during winter and as a result I grew up on beautiful bream, whiting, flathead and deep sea fish such as snapper and pearl perch. I don't think I've ever eaten bass but it looks a beautiful fish. Our bait of choice was either beach worms or soldier crabs. The crabs could only be gathered on a low tide and the memories I have of my dad picking me up from the school bus with the boat on back to go catch crabs is exciting. Other times we would sit on an upturned bucket under a beautiful moon waiting for the moment to be right to gather them up. As for the worms, (little known fact about Heather here) I'm still the best at catching them out of the sand in the family and boy does it give me a thrill! I must say your bait sound more convenient but ours definitely more exciting! I never could get into the fishing bit....

Thanks Heather...I do wish I lived a little closer to the ocean or gulf.....loved the saltwater fishing....You story reminds me of the country/western song by Trace Adkins.."And she thinks we're just fishing"....

Kevin, thank you. I looked up this song on iTunes and ended up downloading it with tears streaming down my face. It could have been written for my dad and me. All those memories....

I love Bass Fishing. When the water is smooth as glass and the minnows are jumping out of their skins, making the water seem effervescive like champaign I found I can use that rubber frog with numerous treble hooks and rake them in. Usually I have my best luck with the black with yellow stripes on top and big white eye jig. I don't know what they are called and am not really a great fisherman but enjoy reading your articles about Bass fishing.
