Shin splints are a frustrating and painful condition that normally affects athletes and dancers; however it can very easily happen to anyone who has an irregular walk or running style. Essentially, shin splints occur after intense physical strain has been applied to the lower extremities, and the tissue that connects the muscle to the tibia (leg bone) begins to separate. This results in an extraordinarily painful experience for the individual and if left untreated, can cause further issues like stress fractures in the bone. While daily treatment can include allowing the muscles to rest after every physical exertion, and icing, wearing proper insoles or custom made orthotic inserts can be a cheap and easy way to mitigate if not eliminate entirely, shin splints.
Custom insoles provide the wearer with several degrees of protection against shin splints. For instance, the added benefit of a few extra layers of EVA foam, provide that much more cushion for the feet and legs during intense physical exertion. As a result, the strain is lessened and shin splints immediately become less likely to occur. Following that, the actual design of custom insoles serves to redistribute the weight of the human body more evenly and more efficiently across the entirety of the foot.
The human body can exert up to 4-5 times its actual weight on the feet when running. That is to say, a person who weighs 150 pounds can put as much as 750 pounds of pressure on their feet, upon every running step. Custom insoles serve to help protect the muscles in the feet from the strain produced by that extra weight. Finally, the form of the insoles realigns the joints, muscles and bones in the foot into the most efficient arrangement, essentially as they would be under the most ideal and natural conditions.
As a result of these factors, simply utilizing custom insoles can go to great lengths to reduce the possibility of shin splints. They can be a simple and cheap way to do so and furthermore act as preventative care for the future. Additionally, and on top of all of that, custom insoles can be used in one’s day to day routine and can provide the wearer with protection all throughout the day. Finally, as a result of the materials used in the production of insoles, typically EVA foam, orthotic insoles act as an odor reducer! Shin splints are just to the tip of the iceberg. Custom insoles can protect the wearer against all kinds of medical issues and are a cheap and available addition to one’s daily routine.
