Should My Heart Be Pounding After An Elliptical Workout?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Many times people think that in order to get a good aerobics workout with an elliptical trainer or treadmill they need to push themselves to the point where they can feel their heart pounding in their chest or hear it thudding in their ears. This is a common misconception that comes from the idea that the harder you push yourself the more calories you will burn, and thus the better results you will get.

I would like to show you why this is not always how things work.

Losing weight or staying fit is not all about counting calories in and calories out, as some people would have you believe. There are many factors that influence weight loss including overall health, metabolism, what type of calories are being consumed, and where the calories are being burned from. This last one is what I would like to discuss in this article.

A calorie is simply a measure of energy which is stored within our bodies. This is the energy that our body uses to do all the amazing things it does. Even when we are sleeping, calories are being burned to pump our hearts and lungs, to dream, and to keep all the other various parts of our bodies working.

There are different ways our body stores this energy as well. Sugar is stored in our body for short term energy that can be accessed quickly. Over time, if this sugar is not burned up it will be converted to fat. Another place our body stores energy is in our muscles.

When you push yourself so hard during a cardio workout (on an elliptical machine or otherwise) that your heart begins to pound, you are burning too many calories too fast. Often, you will burn up your stores of sugar fairly quickly doing this. Then, your body must look someplace else to get energy to fuel the exercise.

Because you are burning calories so fast your body will not be able to get the energy it needs from fat quickly enough. It takes some time for your body to convert fat to accessible energy. In cases like this, your body will draw energy from your muscles to get the energy it needs.

Yes, that's right, your body is eating up your muscles to fuel your exercise. If you want to lose fat, you need lean muscle mass in order to boost your metabolism. Forcing your body to go to your muscles to fuel a cardio workout is counterproductive.

To combat this, it is important for you to get a good aerobics exercise targeting both the Fat Burn Zone and the Cardio Zone. The Fat Burn Zone is a low intensity exercise that will keep your heart rate fairly low. In this zone you will burn a higher percentage of fat from overall calories burned. In the Cardio Zone, your percentage of calories burned compared to overall calories is lower, however you are burning more calories overall, and as a result more fat overall as well.

It is when you get beyond the Cardio Zone that you enter what I call the Danger Zone. This pushes your heart rate past 170 or 180 and you will feel your heart pounding. This is the zone you want to avoid if you don't want your body to cannibalize your muscles to get energy. Another way to tell when you've reached the Danger Zone is if you can't carry on a conversation without running out of breath directly after your exercise.

It is important to note that a good fitness or weight loss strategy will include more than just aerobics exercise. You also need to build muscle to boost your metabolism. This is why I recommend a good elliptical trainer for weight loss. An elliptical trainer will get you an aerobics exercise and can help you to tone those muscles at the same time.

The Sole E35 Elliptical Trainer works very well for this and is designed to be used at home. It is very sturdy and will not shake or rattle when in use. It is also great because of the ergonomic design and it includes a very accurate chest strap heart rate monitor.
