Training With Resistance Bands

Are you tired of the gym? Driving after a long day of work just to fight elbow to elbow over machines dripping with some other person's exercise juices? Maybe you're tired of doing the same boring circuit or weight lifting routines? Maybe even, with today's economy, you don't think a $50/month gym membership is in your budget much longer? Well, that's all understandable (and after "exercise juices", I'm considering leaving my gym, too). Maybe these are questions you've been asking yourself, or maybe you're just looking to add a little spice to your workouts, but have you ever considered adding resistance bands to your training?

There are several benefits to resistance bands including building and toning muscle, burning fat, increasing aerobic ability, increasing balance, coordination, and core strength, etc. However, without delving into too much fancy-shmancy sciencey stuff, here are some brief off-the-top benefits of using strength bands:

Versatility -- They're a gym in a bag. Seriously, just about any motion you can perform at a gym, and possibly every motion in general, and any weight you can use, resistance bands can match or beat it. Pulling, pushing, squatting, lunging, and whatever else you can think of - they can do it. The best part is: They can do everything dumbells or barbells can't!

Affordability -- I personally have two gym memberships - one for each state I work in - and one is $15/month, the other is $58/month. You'll be hard pressed to find a better deal than $15/month, but even at this "incredible deal", it doesn't take into account taxes, yearly enhancement fees (Uh, what?), or any other hidden fees that are liable to creep up. Not to mention the fact that, unless you sign up during some special promotion, most memberships cost between $50-$150 just to start up! We'll say a conservative $200/year and as much as $600+/year. I've seen entire resistance band sets of several hundred pounds go for fractions of these.

Safety -- Ever been on the losing end of a barbell during a bench press, with nobody around? I have. Though it gave me a pretty gnarly chest bruise I could chalk up to alligator wrestling, it's not something I intend to repeat, ever. I'm not going to say they're 100% safe, but nothing ever is - ever tripped while walking or bit your cheek chewing bubble gum? However, unlike free weights that require gravity to function properly, resistance bands do not. Ever dropped a 45 pound weight plate on your toe? Hurts a bit more than dropping a 1/2 pound rubber band on your face, that's for sure.

The options for resistance bands are limitless. So if you're still thinking "are resistance bands for me?" I'd say from the stay at home mom (or dad) looking to get in a quick workout while the kids are taking a nap, to the defensive lineman looking to gain more explosive power and strength, I am confident resistance bands certainly have a place in your locker. Again, they're as versatile as you want them to be, more affordable than half a year at most gyms around the world, and a much quicker and safer way to work out on the go - from hotel rooms to your own back yard, I'm sure resistance bands can work wonders in your new athletic lifestyle. I hope this article has helped you overcome any reasoning you may have created against working out, but I have faith that you can become stronger than your excuses!
