Why Following the Latest Fitness Craze Can Be A Sure Way to Fail

There is always a new fitness craze / product being released that promises to get you the fat loss or muscle building results you dream of. The reason for all these products being released is that the manufactures realise that we all want to take a shortcut if there is one.

While all the new crazes / products do a certain job, none of them are going to make miracles come true. They are just a different tool to do the job that something else can do. The kettle bell really is just a weird shaped dumbbell, yes you can use it slightly different, but it’s a weird shaped dumbbell. An abdominal crunching machine just aids you through a crunch movement etc.

As a personal trainer I watch people jump from one piece of equipment to another as they come in and out of fashion. But the question I believe all people trying to achieve their body goal should ask is what do I need to do in order to achieve that? Is using this random exercise going to get me to my goal?

If you were to set off on a journey with no clear destination and you just guessed where to go, then there is pretty much no chance of you getting there. In the same way if you don’t have a plan to achieve your dream body and you just perform random exercises, then you will never get to your dream goal.

Instead of following random crazes, products and exercises decide what it is that you really want to achieve and think about the stages you need to take to ensure you reach the destination.

If you are trying to get that beach body for your holiday that you have booked for in 2 months’ time and you need to lose the gut (guys) or get that toned bum you have wanted for so long (ladies) then you need to target these goals head on.

By this I mean don’t use random exercises, find out what you need to be doing in order to achieve this. For example, storing fat on the stomach is usually related to stress and doing endless crunches is a stress full exercise. This combination is never going to work. Storing fat on the bum can be due to your gluteal muscles not firing due to excessive sitting and wearing heels or it can also be due to long cardio sessions while following a low fat diet.

So instead of following a random exercise program, ask a professional to make you an exercise program. If someone in the gym asks me for a program I do it free of charge despite charging nearly £50 an hour for personal training. Most personal trainers are happy to help those who appreciate their service.
