Dangers Of Processed Meat

My kids love hot dogs. They can not take peanut butter sandwiches to school due to some students with life-threatening allergic reactions, so lunch meat is a convenient alternative. I love the crunch bacon makes. Until recently, I usually kept these processed meat out of the house. What kind of harm am I causing my family? Which part is most dangerous, the chemicals or the high amounts of unhealthy fats?

The fat is very dangerous. Our bodies store pollutants from what we eat in our fat cells. Animals' bodies do the same. Some chemicals found in fat include heavy metals like cadmium and mercury as well as pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs). Pesticides? PCBs? Mercury? Yikes! I wouldn't go out and buy a box of PCBs, pour it into a cup and tell my kids to eat it. So every time my family eats these meats, I am practically doing that in a sneaky way.

I noticed that we caught an awful respiratory illness around the same time I allowed my family to eat this unhealthy fare. I'm not saying that we wouldn't have become sick, but would we have recovered more quickly if we had abstained? Yes, there is a good chance because processed meats cause our livers distress and decrease our immune system.

Diets high in meat and low in fruits and vegetables tend to cause high blood pressure. This is exasperated when the source of meat is processed meat. Processed meat also leads to pancreatic cancer. It is important to note that cancer, not heart disease, is the nation's number one killer at present.

Many people think that the FDA and USDA and other government agencies over-manage our lives. There is one instance where that would have benefited us all. Back in the 1970s, the USDA attempted to ban sodium nitrate because it is toxic. Sodium nitrate makes processed meats look fresh and people tend to gravitate toward red food. Manufacturers won on the grounds that there was no other preservative they could use in packaged meat, or so they claimed. Now, the USDA refuses to discuss sodium nitrate and switched alliances. It leans toward protecting the food companies over the consumer.

While researching the processed meat, I found out that store-bought milk has high concentrations of these chemicals. Yet, it is illegal in my state, as well as many other states, for a cattle farmer to sell his cow's milk. They have to take it to a co-op before it is legally distributed. I know a person whose cows are fed an organic diet and have significantly lower levels of these compounds, if they are present at all. This law sounds backwards.

Since the problem is more wide spread than just processed meat, eating foods high in anti-oxidants will prevent our bodies from converting sodium nitrate into nitrosamines. Some useful anti-oxidants include vitamins C and E. Chlorella is known to remove heavy metals and dangerous compounds from our bodies. Eat chlorella before or during processed food consumption.

If you have the misfortune of having health problems related to meat, especially processed meat, consumption, evidence shows that changing diets can prevent problems from cropping up again. Consume more fruits and vegetables. Eating a diet higher in chicken is known to decrease the recurrence of precancerous polyps in the colon.

The best solution of all is to avoid processed meat and switch to fresh, grass-fed, free-range meat. In the long run, it will allow us to live healthier lives and it costs less because we may avoid various cancer treatments.

Being a mum, I'm always in search of healthy recipe for my family as well. I try my best to avoid processed food and yes I managed to abstain from such food most of the time but of course we have the occasional exceptions. unfortunately in some schools in Singapore, processed deep fried food have INFILTRATED the canteens. Guess when the time comes for my kids to go to school, I'll probably prepare his meals for him just like what my sis is doing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and findings Becky!

No problem. I have a friend who grew up in Singapore, by the way. She lives in the United States now. Anyway, I think that garbage food is taking over world wide. I watched a short documentary 2 days ago about the effects of the western diet on Samoans. I was surprised how much the western diets have changed their lives for the worst.

Thank you for the compliments. My former neighbor died from colon cancer and he was barely 40. He left behind a wife and two children. I need to make changes in my kitchen so I can change my diet, too.
