Healthy Smoothies for Breakfast

It can be such a pain to get a good breakfast in the morning. You're tired and maybe also trying to get out the door as quickly as possible. It's tempting to skip breakfast entirely, but you know that's a bad idea in the long run. Don't worry - once you get in the habit of making healthy smoothies for breakfast, you won't look back.

One of the great things about smoothies is that they're really quick and easy to prepare. There's no cooking involved, and soon you'll be able to whip one up in less than five minutes. If you tend to be in a rush at breakfast time, a great accessory to get is a reusable cup with a straw and lid. With cup in hand, you can get out the door and drink your smoothie on the way to school or work. (Do remember to rinse the blender before you leave, though, if you want to keep your smoothie habit running smoothly.)

Because of the sweetness of the fruit, smoothies are high in healthy carbs, which give you a quick energy boost in the morning when you need it most. Carbs do burn off relatively quickly, though, so if you find that breakfast smoothies don't give you the staying power you need to get through your morning, consider adding ingredients with some fat or protein (which provide energy for longer). For example, you could try yogurt, whole or skim milk, coconut milk, almond milk or nut butter. Alternately, you can keep something protein-dense like hard-boiled eggs on hand to have with your smoothie, or just remember to pack a mid-morning snack.

For an additional healthy boost, you can add nutrient-dense ingredients like a little spinach (you won't even notice the taste of a few leaves), some ground flax or chia seeds, or bee pollen. I prefer to stick with whole-food ingredients, myself, but some people also like to add protein powders or vitamin blends to their breakfast smoothies.

Some smoothie-lovers enjoy the routine of having the same breakfast every day, but if you get bored easily there are lots of ways to vary your routine once you learn how to make smoothies. For example, you could alternate between berry smoothies, tropical fruit smoothies, and even chocolate-peanut-butter-banana smoothies. Who knows? Once you get in the habit, you may realize how easy it is to incorporate other healthy whole-food habits throughout your day.
