How Much Water Should I Drink A Day?

Feeling dizzy or sleepy?  Have dry skin or cracked lips?  Is your head pounding?  You may be dehydrated.  It is very important that you drink enough water every day so that you stay fully hydrated and that your body can function properly.  How much water you need a day depends on several factors.  Most doctors and nutritionists recommend anywhere from six to eight glasses a day as the right amount of water for the average adult.  This recommendation has remained the same for several decades.  However, there has been some fine-tuning to the issue over the last few years.

Like any other type of machine, our body requires a certain amount of water in order to be able to function properly.  A shortage of water in the body can cause some very serious side effects.  Water is such an important component of the body yet some people still refuse to remind themselves of that fact.  It is so important that if you do not get enough water and end up dehydrated, in some instances it can lead to death.  This is not a good thing.  Older people and children are very vulnerable to this medical problem.  Water is second only to air as the most important requirement for your body. 

It is interesting to realize that a human can live possibly for several weeks without food but can only survive for a few days without water.   When water is lost from the body by everyday processes like sweating and urination, it must be replaced.  Replenishing our bodies with water is vital to our health and well-being.  The water we lose from these normal functions can be re-gained by drinking lots of fluids.  Water is the best thing to drink but researchers have now found, contrary to previous beliefs, that juices, other beverages and even eating fruits and vegetables counts towards your daily water consumption quota.  This is good news because some people just cannot tolerate drinking six to eight glasses of plain water per day.

Water helps your body maintain a normal temperature and also helps the air we breathe be carried to our blood cells to circulate throughout our bodies.  It helps to remove toxins, waste and pollutants from our systems.  When you drink enough water, your skin starts to look better.  Your digestive systems functions better when you are well hydrated.  Getting enough fluids also helps to prevent kidney stones.  You will know that you are getting enough water if your urine is clear.  The darker your urine is, the less hydrated you are.  The clearer your urine is, the more hydrated you are. 

If you are overly concerned with being dehydrated, you can see your family doctor.  You can ask them how much  water drink a day?   There is a simple test they can run to see if you need to be drinking more water and taking in more fluids.  They can also let you know if six to eight glasses a day is the right amount for you or if you need more water.  An easy way to remember to drink water is to try to drink at least two glasses with each of the three meals you eat per day.  That is a simple way to keep track of the amount of water you are taking in.
