How to Eat Healthier Today

When you feel motivated to change your eating habits, you might not want to wait. There are lots of big changes you can make over time, but you can also eat healthier today. There are lots of different opinions about what is the healthiest diet, but there are also a few places to start that most nutritionists can agree on.

Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables

They make up the largest group on the food pyrmaid, and are also crucial to pretty much every alternative nutritional system. You might prefer to avoid them, but if you want to eat healthier you will need to face them sooner or later - so why not today? Some vegetables are more dense in nutrients than others, but it's hard to go wrong with produce. You can start with your favorites or whatever you can find in your fridge or favorite lunch spot. Try to have a minimum of one generous serving with each meal. If you already do that, more would be better. Fruit makes a great snack, too.

Cut Down on Sugar

Excess sugar consumption is linked with all kinds of health problems including diabetes, cancer, and premature aging. It might be best if we didn't use any refined sugar at all, but any way you can cut back is a good start. This goes for all kinds of sugars, too, including high-fructose corn syrup. So, skip a soda or dessert, choose a healthier option like juice or fruit, or at least try a smaller portion. Most artificial sweeteners have their own associated health risks and may not even be better than sugar overall, so it's best if you can just get in the habit of eating less sweets.

Cook at Home

You don't have to be an award-winning chef to prepare your own meals, and most people can easily learn to cook a few of their favorite dishes if they don't already know how. This doesn't mean making macaroni and cheese out of a box, though. Since it's made of healthy whole food, pretty much anything you can cook from scratch is healthier than what you get at most restaurants or out of most packages. If nothing else, you can avoid the many artificial additives and low-quality oils that are often used. Don't forget to include some vegetables!

Next Steps

You can get pretty far with these tips, but once you have them under your belt you might want to expand your culinary horizons. Next time you go shopping, try some ingredients that are new to you, and consider buying some foods organic.
