Making Bread In A Bread Machine Beats Out Boring Lunchboxes

If you’re looking at your packed lunch without any enthusiasm, it could be you haven’t tried making bread in a bread machine yet, which means you’re still missing out on the warm aromatic delight of fresh home baked bread and the gourmet sandwiches you could be enjoying.

Shop bought bread even from the baker was never on my own list of tasty things to eat, just a bland but mess free and convenient way of eating cheese or chicken. Until one life changing day when mom was convinced by the as seen on TV advert and bought a Breville. From the first smell of the bread baking I was hooked and I have never eaten shop bought bread since – why would you? These were the early days of bread machines and the loaves had a skyscraper shape with no length, but oh wow, every bite tasted superb.

I think the first one was a Breville because that was ‘the’ brand to have and probably the only brand available we could afford - now twenty years later there’s been a huge revolution in home bread machines which is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. With so many more people baking their own bread, flour choice has blossomed and now all sorts of seeded flour, malted flour and even individual premixed artisan bread flour is available such as dried tomato and Parmesan or olives and rosemary - pictured is tiger bread dough made in a machine then shaped into rolls and baked in a conventional oven.

One major jump forward years ago now, was the introduction of timers and delays, meaning you can load up and go to bed, waking up in the morning to the glorious scent of fresh bread baking - some mornings in winter this is all that gets me out of bed!

So What’s With The More Expensive Bread Makers?

Most of the makers have been refining their designs for years now and the technology is simple enough that most bread machines go on for years even if you use them every day. If you are looking to compare bread machines they vary in price from about $45 for a very basic model, to $300 plus for the gourmet do-it-all models. The funny thing is that no matter if you have an expensive or budget machine the loaves will taste pretty much the same, if baked with the same ingredients.

The features are way more versatile, cheap models don’t always have a timer at all, just on or off. Additionally by paying more you get a lot of programs to make artisan breads, including French Brioche, fruit breads and rye, plus about twenty more! Most of the top models bake cakes as well, and no they don’t have to have a hole in the middle so long as you get a machine where the kneading blade retracts.

You can still make the same artisan breads with a basic model taking care of the kneading and rising, leaving you to take and shape the dough before baking in a conventional oven – really you don’t need the top models to eat awesome bread. However, as with a lot of kitchen gadgets I’ll always pay out a little extra to have features I'll want and with bread machines, the delay function is an essential – trust me, that early morning hot bread heaven is so worth it!
