I had heard all the hype about this new miracle sports drink Coconut Water and how this product would lower your blood pressure and was better than any other drink on the market today. I did a bit of checking and thought it would be a good time to get the facts out. Here are the results of my searching. " Sports drink review: Coconut Water"
What is it?
Coconut Water is the water stored inside young coconuts. There are many different kinds of drinks available. Some are flavored and have sugar added. I was only interested in the natural, pure Coconut Water, as I believe that less is better.
This is a good all around drink if your work outs are average and you are not requiring it to replace lost nutrients as the comparison to the likes of Gatorade are inflated. Although pure coconut water does share many ingredients with theses high powered sports drinks, the levels of potassium and sodium are not enough for the serious athletes. Also worth noting, many doctors claim the low levels of sodium and high levels of potassium are actually not good for you after a strenuous workout.
Benefits of Coconut Water verses sports drinks, juices or soda.
- Low fat or fat free
- High level of Potassium
- Low sodium
- Sugar free
- No preservatives; 100% juice
- All natural drink
The Myths of drinking Coconut Water
- It will not by itself lower your blood pressure
- Does not re hydrate well enough for the serious athletes
- The versions with fruit have added sugar and calories
If you do heavy work outs or are active in sports, you would be better off sticking with the proven sports drinks that will give you everything you are needing to replace as your body sweats it out.
So are they worth the money?
A choice between drinking regular juices and soda and this all natural drink the Coconut Water wins hands down. Not only are you not loading yourself full of unnecessary sugars and carbs, you are getting the benefits of potassium, sodium, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids, cytokine, and phyto-hormones. Not a bad trade off at all! Being that there's no lack of finding places to buy Coconut Water, being able to buy it at will should not be a problem.
In conclusion, this drink will do more good than harm for the average person looking to add a tasty drink to their regular healthy diet. At only 50 calories and no harmful ingredients, I feel this drink could help round off a low carb, high protein diet!
Hope this helps you in choosing s good healthy drink!
