Arch Support And What They Are

Arch support is a reference usually to shoes or orthotic inserts that provide physical support to the arch of the human foot. Incidentally, a large minority, if not even a majority of people suffer from foot arches that are not considered “normal.” As a result, there is a large industry that is devoted to designing and manufacturing foot care products that serve to provide that mass of people with an option to help protect their feet from conditions like being flat footed and having a high arch. Both conditions (and all those in between) present unique challenges that must be understood before taking one’s first steps towards recovery.

To begin with, someone with flat feet has a condition where the entire foot, or a majority of the surface area makes direct contact with their shoe or the ground they are treading on. While this may seem like a beneficial evolutionary trait, it is in fact an issue for the joints and tendons in the feet. The feet are designed in such a way that there are two main points that are supposed to carry the majority of the weight of the body, the ball and the heel. The rest of the foot is designed for other purposes. When they are tasked with transferring the weight of the body on every step, they are used improperly and wear quicker. Arch support for people with flat feet aims to correct that by transferring the weight mostly to the ball and heel.

Conversely, in a situation such as that experienced by those people with a high arch, they are witness to their feet transferring all of the weight of the body to just the ball and heel of the foot. Furthermore, with the arch at such a high angle, it places significant stress on the Cuneiform and Metatarsal bones. These stresses wear the foot and cause all kinds of pain and suffering in the individual in question. A pair of insoles with arch support for instance will transfer the weight from the ball and heel of the foot, and place it onto other areas of the foot.

Now, people with a normal arch can also benefit from wearing arch support as well. If they spend a lot of time on their feet, or if they participate in sports, they will place a lot of stress on their feet. Wearing a pair of shoes or insoles with arch support will relieve some of that stress.
