Custom Made Orthotics Provide Pain Relief

Have you, or are you experiencing pain in your feet, ankles, knees, back and hips that is somewhere between moderate and debilitating in it’s intensity? Look at your feet. Do you have very high arches or flat feet? Have you, or are you experiencing shin splints or do you have consistently tired or aching legs? Pain of any type is usually the reason you visit a doctor. However a podiatrist is perhaps the first type of doctor you need to see if these are the areas in which your pain is located. After a thorough examination your podiatrist may speak with you about custom made orthotics.

There are many reasons you may find orthotics beneficial. Perhaps you are an athlete or play high-impact sports. Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces for long periods of time, maybe you have had a previous foot or leg injury? Overweight folks often have additional stress placed on their ligaments in both their feet and legs and find relief from properly fitted orthotics. Arthritis sufferers have found that with custom made orthotics they may have enhanced mobility, because as you know arthritis strikes body joints creating immense pain and restricting movement. Diabetics also have specific foot pain, they can get a neuroma, which is a "pinched nerve" between the third and fourth toes and can find relief with the cushioning effect and support of orthotics.

Sometimes feet that are not in balance and not supported correctly creating a misalignment in your body.

Your foot doctor may diagnose you with any number of ailments, a few if these include plantar fasciitis, bunions, abnormal biomechanics, poor limb alignment to name a few.

You have seen the over-the-counter ready to purchase and ready for immediate use orthotics that are available at almost every type of store. Some people find relief with these, but many others don't. You do not have an average foot, no one does, in fact your feet are completely different from each other, you may have noticed this when buying shoes. This one size fits all philosophy can do more harm than good. We are not doctors and using these off the shelf items is a type of self-medicating. If you have a wart would you take a cold pill? Of course not. So why would you waste your valuable time deciding what might work, as well as throw your hard earned money at an item that is probably not going to take care of the root cause of your pain?

Only a podiatrist can diagnose your symptoms and prescribe you the correct orthotic for your ailment. Remember custom made orthotics are created from a mold of your own feet and are designed to bring your two feet specific support and comfort. Your orthotics are designed to move the way your feet move, specifically crafted for your foot and its problems.

There are two different types of custom made orthotics, functional and accommodative.

Functional orthotics control abnormal motion, meaning they are semi-rigid and made from plastic or perhaps graphite so that motion is somewhat restricted. Functional orthotics help in the treatment of problems such as shin splints and tendonitis.

Accomodative orthotics are softer so they are more flexible while still providing support yet cushioning the foot. Some of the uses for this type of orthotics include plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot ulcers, and other uncomfortable conditions.

Clinical studies have proven that custom made orthotics have decreased foot pain and improve foot and leg functionality.

Although the cost is a bit more than the over-the-counter orthotics, often insurance will help cover the cost. Most importantly you are assured your custom made orthotics were crafted specifically for you and were designed to help with your particular foot, ankle, leg, hip and even back pain.
