Food As Medicine

Today many people think that food is just fuel for our body, and forget the old saying,“you are what you eat“. We all pile tones of unhealthy food in our bodies, and are not aware of consequences such as various illnesses: heart disease, vascular disease, diabetes, cancer and many others. The empire of fast food popped up all over the world, selling treated, high fat, salty food designed to offer quick charge for our bodies. Food such as burgers, french frice, coke, became main food, not only in America but worldwide.

According to the National Cancer Institute, less than 25 percent of Americans eat foods that they should eat in order to protect against cancer and heart disease. Every second American will develop some form of heart disease. Breast cancer affects one in nine women. Among men older than 50 years, every eleventh will get prostate cancer. 15-20 million Americans older than 45 are ill whit osteoporosis. 14 million Americans suffer some type of diabetes.

About 35 percent of all cancers are correlated with a poor diet. If you change your eating habits, we can lower the risk of cancer more than one-third. Other diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis can be prevented or kept under control thru right diet.

What to eat to protect your health?

Selections of what we eat is probably one of the most important things for our health. Yet many of us do not choose wisely because you do not know which foods are best. This list will help you learn how to eat well and useful. Between thousands of meals i have chosen the top 50, which i think are the healthiest:

Meet, fish and milk products: turkey, chicken, salmon, trout, mackerel, tuna, cod, game, beef, milk, cheese.

Vegetables: black beans, read beans, buckwheat, pumpkin, celery, garlic, peas, cucumber, corn, lens, onion, carrot, pepper, parsley, wheat bran, wheat germ, tomato, brown rice, asparagus, spinach, oat bran.

Fruit: bananas, almonds, blueberries, peaches, cranberries, grapefruit, grapes, guava, apple, strawberry, kiwi, pear, lemon, watermelon, raspberry, tangerine, apricot, cherry.

Proper cooking

Firstly, you need to know what you want to buy and how to distinguish good from bad goods. Secondary, how to handle food when you bring it home because even the best food can lose its quality if it is not properly stored. Finally, you need to know how to properly prepare and cook foods to preserve its most important nutritional properties.

Fresher is better! From the moment you picked fruits and vegetables they begin to lose some of the vitamins. Avoid cut fruits and vegetables such as melons and pineapples. Fruits and vegetables should be processed as little as possible before you eat them.

Store your food in tightly sealed containers in refrigerator. Do not cut fruits and vegetables when you store it in the refrigerator. Avoid heat and sunlight. Some foods like bananas and potatoes, should not be kept in a refrigerator. Put the fruit and vegetables in a cool place, away from sunlight which can destroy vitamins. Vitamins are very important for your body if you are sick.

Gently wash the fruit in cold water immediately before eating. Scrape it and not to peel, because the crust has a lot of fiber and nutrients. However, unless you are buying a naturally produced food, you will need to peel it. For example, apples and cucumbers are usually sprayed with wax.

Do not cook too long. The general rule is: Eat vegetables raw or cook it just a bit, to be more firm and crisp. Do not cook it to boil.

Remember, food can help you when you are sick, so chose wisely what you eat!

Street Talk

Great article Marko. I am changing my eating habits. I was diagnosed with diabetes last year so I am doing everything I can including walking about 45 - 60 minutes daily. I am feeling a lot better and making wiser choices in what I eat. I find that it starts with one simple step. Small changes started making a big difference. The weight started to come off and I have more energy. My main drink now is water. I agree with you, food is medicine. ~ Diane
