Heel Spur Exercises

If you are currently suffering from a heel spur (or spurs!) you may well be thinking that surgery is the only way you are going to rid yourself of the pain. Luckily this is not actually the case. If the thought of surgery leaves you distressed and sweaty - as it does me - needles in my hand - no thank you very much! - then there are others ways you can get relief.

Heel Spur Exercises have been proven to be very effective in treating pain associated with heel spurs and also preventing them from forming in the first place. Tightness in the calves can be a major factor in the development of this painful condition so some good stretching of the calf muscles can be very effective.

The calf stretching heel spur exercise is the very common one that is shown in gyms and most exercise DVD's. Stand with one leg in front of the other with the front foot flat on the floor and the other leg bent at the knee. Then push on the front leg and feel the muscle stretch. Relax and repeat. Although you will mainly feel the stretch in the calf you are working down to the heel as well, as the tendons in the leg do go all the way to the heel.

Its rather strange that as with most things we do where feet could be involved we tend to ignore them. Why is this? I, for example, will moisturise everywhere after a shower but tend to stop at the ankle!! So its common that when we stretch after exercise we work most of our body, but again neglect the feet. If you have been jogging, don't you think your feet need a little something after pounding those pavements?

A heel spur exercise you can do for the actual foot is to scrunch up a towel, put it under the toes and then squeeze it as tight as you can with the toes. It does feel really nice and you will be surprised at the difference that you will feel in your whole foot after just a few sessions.

For those gadget people, there are some great devices available to buy which you can use for excellent heel spur exercises. They mimic the same principle as the towel scrunching exercise but you will get a much more defined workout so will feel better results and maybe in less time.

So if you are suffering from painful heel spurs or want to ensure you don't end up suffering from them at some future date, ensure that the foot and calf are stretched well and on a regular basis. Joggers and runners in particular should ensure they complete the heel spur exercises to keep the leg and foot supple.
