How To Choose Compression Stockings

Picture this: You are having a massive pain in your right leg for the past two weeks.

You finally decide to see your doctor and he diagnoses the problem to be DVT.

1st shock. You didn’t think it was THAT serious.

I’ll give you few minutes to recover.

Then, the doctor tells you that you need to go through at least 3 months treatment with injections in your stomach, blood tests, check-ups, etc.

2nd shock. You almost faint (that’s partially because your leg hurts so badly…)

Finally, he gives you a prescription to buy compression stockings. He adds also that if you had been wearing these stockings before, you probably could have prevented getting DVT.

Well…thanks. Who was supposed to know all this? Normal people don’t wear compression socks!

It might come to you as a surprise but DVT is not a disease that strikes only pregnant women or the elderly. It can occur also with young people and athletes, believe it or not. Just as Varicose veins is a common desease.

The doctor was right, of course. If you think about it, the use of compression stockings is by far the cheapest and most convenient solution for DVT prevention and it has almost no side effects.

So, how do the compression socks work? What are compression socks?

The elastic stockings exert a compression on the vein walls. The degrees of compression are expressed in units called “mm/Hg” (millimeters of mercury). Basically, they work on the concept of “decreasing graduated compression”, meaning that they give higher pressure to the ankle and then they progressively decrease towards the knee and up.

What procedure should you follow when you decide to purchase a pair of compression hosiery?

• First, make sure you choose and buy the stockings according to your measurements, your needs and/or prescription.

• You should remove the stockings at least once a day for care, hygiene and control of the skin.

• It is better to have AT LEAST two pairs of stockings in order to wash them in the laundry.

• Verify from time to time that they are properly placed and make sure they are not too tight below your knees (blocking your blood circulation).

• It may be necessary to regularly test the legs, to avoid possible complications. Edema of the leg results in excessive pressure of the your stockings.

• Dry your feet and legs before putting on the compression hosiery.

Hope this info was helpful to you, see you in my next article!
