Natural Remedies – Chronic Pain and Its Impact. Chronic pain and inflammation can severely impact on quality of life. It can affect both physical and mental health, hampering your ability to work and earn an income. I have met many people over the years suffering from headaches, migraines, injury pain, inflammatory disease and good old fashion aches and pains!

I have met many people over the years suffering from headaches, migraines, injury pain, inflammatory disease and good old fashion aches and pains!

Anyone in chronic pain will tell you how much it affects his or her life. There are many ways to approach pain and this can vary greatly depending on its cause. A few methods to help reduce it or even eliminate it all together are as follows:

Diet- what you eat (and drink) can have an effect on the inflammatory responses in your body. Migraines can have very specific food triggers for some, like red wine, strong cheese or chocolate. Autoimmune conditions of an inflammatory nature such as arthritis may be relieved by consuming fish oil and exacerbated by alcohol, nightshade foods and caffeine.

Sleep - sleep would have to be one of the best ways to lessen inflammation in the body and therefore pain. It gives your body a chance to recharge.

Weight - if you suffer from lower limb joint pain and you are overweight without doubt losing a few Kilos will reduce the stress on your joints and ultimately your level of pain.

Stress - this makes your body release higher amounts of cortisol from the adrenal glands and in turn has a detrimental effect on connective tissue. Stress can also make you ‘feel’ pain more. Something always hurts more if you are not in the right frame of mind (stressed).

Here are some tips to reduce aches and pains:

• Cut down on inflammatory foods – i.e. alcohol, caffeine and sugar

• Increase anti-inflammatory foods, i.e. oily fish, curcumin, green tea (it has minimal caffeine), green leafy vegetables and all brightly colored vegetables and fruits, as these are full of antioxidants.

• Reduce the stress in your life and learn new ways to manage chronic pain that you may be experiencing.

• Know your triggers and learn what exacerbates the symptoms of your pain.
