Why? I am not pregnant. Why? I am not a grandma yet. Why? I don't have varicose veins. Why? I am not planning to fly anywhere soon. Why? I have never suffered from any leg/veins/heart disease in my life. Still. You should wear compression stockings.
Why? Let me tell you why.
Even if you are not pregnant or you don't have varicose veins, you might be 1 out of 10 people who might suffer from Deep Vein Thrombosis in your life. It doesn't really matter how healthy or young you are. DVT can strike ANYONE! Even though there are specific symptoms for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), in 50% of cases people don't notice anything. Did you know that DVT affects an estimated two million Americans each year? Did you know that something like 300.000 Americans die from it each year and that's more than breast cancer and AIDS combined!
That's why you need to wear compression socks!
Why? Let me tell you why. Compression stockings can really help preventing deceases such as DVT but also varicose veins and other veins related diseases. I am sure you are asking yourself how. Do they have specific powers? Yes they do. There are many different types of compression stockings, but they work pretty much the same way. They exert a graduated compression on the calf muscle that is stronger on the bottom part of the leg and slowly decreases as you go up. It means that compression socks act as a layer of muscle that help to squeeze your veins so when you walk it massages your calf muscle and pumps the blood up. It is that simple. But usually, the most simple things are those who can really help us in life.
Who usually wears compression socks? (Besides grandmas, pregnant women, etc.?)
You might know that athletes (even golfers) wear them to perform better, but mostly to speed lactate recovery. Businessmen who spend a great deal of time sitting in one place. Not just flying. You might be shocked to know the average time we spend sitting in front of the tv or our work desk. Shop clerks, nurses, doctors. On the contrary, they never sit and suffer from leg fatigue. People who suffer from diabetes, obesity, inactivity or have some veins/heart heredity problems. People who are post surgery, after a long hospitalization or had in the past DVT.
Do you recognize yourself in one of these examples? Perhaps one of your relative or a person you care about? Are you still asking yourself if you should wear compression stockings? No? I thought so!
Don't be unprepared, do yourself a favor and get yourself a good pair of compression socks today! You might not know it but perhaps you are saving your life by doing this simple act. In any case, your legs will really appreciate it and will be grateful to you! :)
