Bears Get Bittersweet Victory, Lose Cutler to Injury

As the Bears were putting the finishing touches on their fifth straight win, news came out that they were losing. It's been reported the quarterback Jay Cutler broke the thumb of his throwing hand while leading his team to a 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers. They are now in a dead heat with the Lions for second place in the division.

Cutler has been one of the hottest QB's in the league in recent weeks, and the Bears were setting themselves up to be in good position to make the playoffs as a wildcard. This could throw all of their plans out the window. While the Bears haven't acknowledged any reports, it has been speculated that he will miss anywhere from 6-8 weeks. They think the injury occurred as he was chasing down Antoine Cason attempting to score a T.A.I.N.T. (Touchdown After INT) He stayed in the game and managed 286 yards and three touchdowns, two in the air and one on the ground.

The win was the fifth straight for the now 7-3 Bears, and it was also the fifth straight defeat for the Chargers. This is their longest slide since the 2003 season. They were attempting to make another late comeback as Cason returned that interception to the Bear 16 yard line. Rivers, as he's been doing with frequency this year, tossed another pick to Major Wright as he tried to squeeze the ball into a tightly covered Vincent Jackson. Jackson had another great day gaining 165 on 7 grabs, but did not get into the end zone.

As is usually the case, the defense makes all the difference in Chicago. They limited the Chargers to 10 points per half, and picked of the wildly erratic Phillip Rivers twice giving him a hefty 17 for the season. They couldn't muster anything on the ground either as Ryan Matthews and fireplug Mike Tolbert combined for only 51 yards rushing on 16 attempts. San Diego's playoff hopes keep dimming as they are now two full games behind in the AFC West.

Cutler spread the love around to eight different receivers with Roy Williams grabbing 5 for 62. However it was underused slot man Johnny Knox who made the big plays when the needed them. He only caught 3 balls, but made them stand out for 93 yards and an acrobatic touchdown catch to complete the scoring for the Bears. Devin Hester had a couple of nice returns (People are still kicking to Devin Hester?), one of 37 yards, and another for 22 yards that set up a second quarter TD by Marion Barber.

The Bears are in good position to make the post season, but they have to keep winning to maintain it. They travel this week to Oakland to battle the first place Raiders, but will do so without Cutler. It's widely assumed that backup Caleb Hanie will be under center for that one, making Matt Forte an even bigger target than he already is. Chicago is hoping they can get Cutler back before the end of the season, and that they can stay in the playoff hunt until then.

Punting to Hester is like having sex with a Kardashian: many NFL players do it; most end up regretting it.
