These are the kinds of days Plaxico Burress would dream about while incarcerated in federal prison for gun charges. A come from behind win was largely aided by three Burress touchdown catches, two of them coming in the second half. The Jets defense was its usual self, limiting the lethal Charger offense to only 14 points.
Things didn't start well for the Jets, as the first score of the game came courtesy of a 37 yard fumble return for a touchdown not even two minutes into the game. The Jets responded right away with a field goal, but San Diego score twice more to go into the half with a 21-10 lead. This is where the defense took over.
Antonio Gates made his much anticipated return to the Charger offense, and other than his TD catch, he was not much of a factor with 5 catches for only 54 yards. To tell you the kind of day that Phillip Rivers had, Gates was his leading receiver as he could only compile 179 yards on the day with the two TD's. Running the ball wasn't any easier, as the injury prone Ryan Matthews had to leave the game early, although he did eventually come back. They totaled only 97 yards rushing, and that is not going to get the job done, especially on the road.
The Jets gave a nod early to future hall of famer LaDanian Tomlinson, as he was designated the starter even though he wasn't going to be much of a factor due to having the flu. He took the team's first carry for a few yards, had a few more touches after that, and then he was done for the day. Shonn Greene finally had the break out day that his fantasy owners have been begging for. His first game this year over 100 yards, he toted the rock 20 times for 112 yards, and added 1 catch for 5.
Speaking for fantasy owners everywhere scrambling to pick up Burress in light of his 3 TD explosion, I suggest you cool your heels a bit. I think this was more of a concentrated effort to get him on track, as you look at his stats for the game and see he still only caught 4 balls for 25 yards. Hardly a standout effort, if you're able to overlook his end zone trips. I wouldn't buy him at this point for the same reason you didn't buy him before. He's not fully back, he's 2 years older, and Mark Sanchez, despite his stellar post season record, isn't that good of a quarterback in the NFL. Since I still own shares ofJets stock in Santonio Holmes, I am still hoping that Sanchez can get it together and make these guys start to be productive.
