Are you the kind of fan who has no problem at all leaving a game when others stay? Do you have trouble admitting it?
I hate to admit it, but I was that kind of fan. Before you hate on me, I would like to say that I have seen the error of my ways and have changed. Coaches and players want their fans to be as tough as they are and support them. Let's see what makes a fair weathered fan and how he or she can be changed as well.
A fair weathered fan comes to the game so late that the ticket takers don't even watch the gate anymore. At least that's what we did at my college games. That means you are missing most, if not all of the first half. I know college students don't have much money, but a true fan just can't miss that much. At that point, you have to wonder if the person is really even a fan or just interested in being seen by friends or fraternity brothers. The fix is to get to the game on time and pay for your ticket, otherwise your fan card needs to be taken away.
A fair weathered fan hates bad weather. If it begins raining at halftime, they are doing everything they can to stay dry, but they are really ready to call it quits before they get soaked. We have all seen games on the television where fans endure the rain until the game is over. but the cameras don't usually show those who are leaving in droves out of the stadium to the parking lot. I remember a game that my girlfriend and I were at and it was getting out of hand and we were losing badly. It began pouring down rain and I was ready to go, but she would have nothing to do with it. That was a wimpy feeling I had that day and she still reminds me of it today. I married her, by the way. The fix is to wear base layers under your clothes and bring an umbrella. If you stay dry, you won't be tempted to leave.
A fair weathered fan goes religously to his/her favorite team's games when they are winning, but somehow doesn't manage to get tickets to games when they are having a losing season. The fix is simple for this. Stick by your team through thick and thin, despite the wins and losses.
If you obey these 3 fixes, you'll get your fan card back and there will be very few regrets like the one I had.
