Denver Fans Tebowing But For All the Wrong Reasons

Tim Tebow took the Denver Broncos down the field and scored a touchdown on a 14 yards pass to Eric Decker. This time Tebow needed to start his comeback attempt about three quarters sooner. That touchdown made the final score 45-3 in favor of the Detroit Lions, but what most fans will take away from this game was the grotesque and sometimes unsightly play from quarterback Tim Tebow.

Tebow hit a disastrous 46% of his passes on a day where it seemed like nothing would go right for them. They started out like a team on a mission, as they took their first drive of the day down the field and converted a field goal for a 3-0 lead. That would be the end of the highlights for Tebow and company. He was good for over 200 yards of offense, but when you can't complete passes with any regularity, you're not going to sustain many drives. He got 63 yards on the ground with 10 rushes, and collected 172 on the 18 passes he was able to complete.

This game was all about the Detroit Lions, and they walked the walk and talked the talk all day long. Matthew Stafford shook off an injured ankle to lead the team with 267 yards and three touchdowns. One of those came on a beautiful 55 yard pass to Calvin Johnson for his 11th touchdown of the season. Johnson, again looking completely uncoverable, racked up 125 yards on 6 catches. The running game has been virtually non-existent the entire season, and yesterday wasn't any different. Maurice Morris led the way with 58 yards, and his back up Keiland Williams chipped in 25,

Detroit is still figuring out how to be a good team. They came out of the gates strong to win their first five games, then were upended by the San Francisco 49ers a couple of weeks ago, and the following week took it on the chin from the Atlanta Falcons. Now they have this win under their belt, they can have some good feelings going into their bye week. They still have something to prove over the second half of the season in order to make the playoffs, as they still have to face the Packers twice, the Saints, Raiders, and Chargers all remain on the schedule.

Denver on the other hand is at a bit of a crossroads. The Elway regime and this coaching staff had nothing to do with the drafting of Tebow. By all accounts he is a great kid, with a wonderful soul, and will do a lot of good around the world. Quarterbacking an NFL franchise just doesn't seem to be the good that he will do. Tebowites rejoiced last week when their "Messiah" led his team back with faith, guts, and heart. This week it was the critics and scouts who saw their projections come to life.

Any quality teams out there will have the kind of day against a Tebow led team, just as the Lions did yesterday. His athleticism and leadership cannot make up for his slow reads, poor technique, and inability to score points. I'm afraid there will be many more days like Sunday, then there will be comebacks like the week previous. John Elway must be happy about this though in one way, Tebow is keeping them in the running for Andrew Luck, and it will be a battle to the end.
