Its about time the NFL takes a good look at itself in the mirror and figures out just who and what they stand for. Here we go again with the New Orleans Saints Careers. Is it right to black list a player without the proper evidence?
This seems to be the question going around the sports talk shows lately. It seems the NFL is back peddling big time and offering a player a lesser penalty in return for dropping a lawsuit against the league.
Whats going on?
Jonathon Vilma has reportedly received an offer to reduce his suspension by 8 games in return for dropping his lawsuit against the NFL. While the league is denying the offer, many people are saying the deal has been offered and Velma has refused it. By his refusal he is feeling he is in pretty good shape going into this litigation.
Why make a deal?
If he truly is innocent as he says he is, the only thing to do is stick by his guns and see this through. By accepting this deal he would be admitting that yes the bounty system did exist, and yes he was part of it. At a time in his career where every game counts, he is best to see this though to the end.
What is up with the NFL?
Is this a sign that maybe the NFL has stepped a bit too far out of its bounds in making these suspension? When a league starts tarnishing a mans reputation they better be sure of what they are doing. By making this kind of an offer is this their way of saying they screwed up?
What next?
I for one will be following this closely, and am curious about just what kind of evidence the NFL has collected in their investigation. They have laid out some pretty hefty suspensions and fines in this case, and once this gets in the courtroom the real facts will have to be presented. If they do indeed have the evidence, then the penalties will stand. If they do not, heads could roll big time. A few New Orleans Saints players reputations are resting on the outcome of this, and I believe it needs to be explored in a court of law, where hopefully justice will prevail.
In any case, the game will go on, and I will be waiting to see just how effective a Saints team without a coach and key players can function. If Drew can pull this off from the huddle, he will be number one in my book!
