The New York Giants were big underdogs going into the game this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were giving the Giants 7.5 points at the infamous Lambeau field. All week the Giants players were talking smack and guaranteeing a victory against last year's super bowl champions. The last time these two teams squared off, the Packers won a close game by three points. So how would this game turnout?
On another frigid day in Lambeau field it set-up a round two match-up between two big heavyweight teams. The Giants really came to play and they showed it right from the start. With an early field-goal by Lawrence Tynes as they drove down the field and picked up a quick three points. The Packers tied the game not long after that with a field-goal of their own by M.Crosby. Then, Eli Manning went to work and delivered a 66-yard touchdown pass to Hakim Nicks to make it 10-3 Giants lead.
Aaron Rodgers answered right back with a 8-yard touchdown pass to J.Kuhn. Tied at 10-10, The Giants were able to get a turnover on a fumble by Green Bay. However, the Packers defense was able to hold them to a field-goal. The next offensive possession for the Packers, the Giants defense was relentless and stopped them with ease. With less than a minute left in the-half, the Giants put a hail-mary and they converted. A 37-yard touchdown pass to Nicks in the end-zone put them up by 10 points. Nicks really made an unbelievable catch by leaping up in the air in a lot of traffic and he came down with the ball.
In the third quarter, the Packers were productive with the ball, but every-time they were about to score they fumbled the ball. Which led to them only getting a field-goal to bring them within seven points. As the momentum of the game began to swing in the home team's favor, another fumble stopped them in their tracks and really turned the game around. Ryan Grant fumbled the ball in Green Bay territory and the Giants recovered it and ended up inside the Packers 10-yard line.
Eli delivered another touchdown pass, this time it was to Manningham for 4-yards. Now, the Giants led 30-13 and hopes were fading away for Rodgers and the Packers. With around six minutes left in the game, Green Bay got a gift on a bad call by the referee on 3rd down and seven. The referee said that Umenyiora hit the quarterback high at the head, but it was clearly a very clean hit. So, because of the penalty the Packers were able to drive down the field and score a touchdown.
With the Packers down 30-20, they performed an onside kick and were unable to recover the ball. This gave the Giants great field-position and Brandon Jacobs was able to put the game away with a 14-yard touchdown run. The Giants defense deserved a lot of credit as they were able to-shutdown one of the best offense's in the NFL this year. Eli Manning really proved himself in this game throwing for 330 yards and three touchdowns. With the win, the Giants advance to the NFC championship game and face a very tough opponent in the San Fransisco 49ers.
Great article! This game was a great game to watch, it was unbelievable how the Packers were not able to score on the Gmen. Considering they should of only scored 10 points, but because of bad referee calls they got some points they never should have. Although, it was sad that one of the coaches son had past away last week and I think it affected their play a little. They were just not as focused as they usually were. All in all, great Sunday afternoon!
I agree with you 100% and it is very easy to blame a loss on a tragedy like this one. I just hate to take that away from the Giants and the great game they had played. Kudos to the better team on this day my friends.
Thanks Josh and it was a great game to watch especially if you are a Giants fan!
