Is the NFL Getting Soft Or Safe?

The NFL has recently made a rule change that has caused much controversy. The new rule is in place to limit the hard hits made on players above the shoulders. The rule also states that a player is not allowed to launch himself into the air and lower his helmet. The rule avoids the helmet to helmet impact that creates players to sustain such violent back and neck injuries.

The most common injury with those kind of hits has been a concussion. Since football is such a violent sport I don't think there is any way to avoid this kind of injury. It seems like every week there is a player side-lined because of a concussion. Roger Goodell is the current NFL commissioner and he is very serious these rules being enforced.

In the past receivers never had any rules to protect themselves when they go over the middle and are left defenseless in the air. Defensive players were always to crush receivers while they were unaware of their surroundings. With the new rule in place, receivers will get protected when they are in a defenseless pose as they come down with the ball. This way defensive players can not just plow right into the receiver when he's not looking. He must allow the receiver to plant his feet for a second and get into a defensive position to soften the blow.

The game keeps changing overtime and we have to keep pace so we can adjust as the game does. This way the game stays competitive and safety remains a top priority in the game. However, everyone is not on the same page about these sudden changes to the game.

In fact, there are many players who are not satisfied with the new rules. They think with the new rule changes it will take the physical toughness aspect out of the game. Players like James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the many who was not pleased, with the changes. Harrison who was recently suspended because of his brutal actions on the field. Harrison has been known for illegal contact to offensive players ever since he was in the league.

In conclusion, most fans have adapted to the rule change without much controversy. However, there are still many that feel these rules take away from the games luster. Football is a physical game, no matter how you slice it. With the serious injuries that occur throughout the season something must get done to protect the players and I think Goodell is doing his best to protect them.

Soft? Safe? It's more like they're getting mafioso. I don't know what's more disgusting, the "bounty program" of players getting bonuses for hurting players, or Charles Barkley finding fault with the person who "snitched" about it!

Yeah, I don't know about Charles's statement he doesn't know what he's talking about. The 'Bounty Program' was disgraceful to professional football it show's a lack of class. I thought this was the NFL, seems more like high school to me. I am sure Goodell will be swift with his punishments and hopefully put an end to it.

Great article, this one is tough for me. I think some of the hits should be legal, and some not! But all in all its exactly what someone would need to know about the rule changes.
