NFL Franchise Tag Put on Big Name Players

Tag! Your it! NFL teams are placing their franchise tags on players. The franchise tag allows a team to place this certain tag on a player that would become an unrestricted free agent. The tag keeps the player on their team for one year if conditions are met. This is done to keep players from going to bigger markets and forming possible super teams. which has been seen in other pro sports.

There is one tag per team if the team decides to use it. This helps boast a roster and gives the team more time to work out the details of a possible long term deal. There were some big names in the NFL that got hit with the tag. Here is who got tagged.

Who Had to Play tag this Year

The Bears and Ravens put their tags to good use. The Bears tagged running back Matt Forte and the Ravens also tagged their star RB Ray Rice.

The Falcons tagged corner Brent Grimes, some think he was a top corner, I disagree. I didn't think he stacked up well to other corners this year.

Cliff Avril was tagged, I think that was a great move by the Detroit Lions. The defensive end opposite Ndamukong Suh played well and when Nick Failrey gets healthy that could pose to be a strong defense next year!

There were some other big names who got tagged too Dashon Goldson, Calais Campbell, Dwayne Bowe, Robert Mathis, Anthony Spencer, DeSean Jackson, Wes Welker, Tyvon Branch, and Fred Davis.

Who Shouldn't Have Played Tag

Drew Brees was a wasted franchise tag. Both parties should have worked harder to get a deal in place. Now you have two big names players in Marques Colston and Carl Nicks.

This is wher my mind was blown, five kickers and one punter were franchised. Then there were some teams who didn't franchise anyone. I guess you can never know how the minds of NFL owners work. You would just figure that they would do more with this option.

What Happens Now

With players like Brandon Carr, Vincent Jackson, Mario Williams, Cortland Finnegan, and other big names we wait to see what will happen to them in free agency. In a year where there were quite a few players that should have been tagged that weren't, and others that should not have been and were, it leaves you to wonder where these big names will end up. Will a few of these big names make teams a Super Bowl contender? Who knows, but the draft is next stayed tuned. You can be sure I will be covering that!
