NFL Player Saves A Drowning Child

Leonard Pope, a member of the Kansas City Chiefs football team, saved a child from drowning on June 11, 2011. Pope, 27, was at a pool party on that fateful day. He heard a woman screaming frantically "He's drowning, like, someone get him." The woman screaming was Anne Moore, mother of the drowning boy, Bryson Moore, 6.

Pope jumped into the deep end of the pool, fully clothed and managed to rescue the boy. Once on the deck of the pool, someone rapped Bryson between the shoulder blades and expelled the water in his lungs.

Writers and fans were calling Leonard Pope a hero. The mayor of Americus, Ga, Pope's hometown proclaimed him a hero also. Pope downplayed all the praise and said that when he saw Bryson in distress, he just acted on instincts. Being a father of two children his paternal instincts just kicked in.

Anyone who sees someone in distress would naturally react by trying to rescue that person. When you see the fear on that person's face it's a natural reaction to try and help. You're not thinking about how you're dressed, or if other people call you a hero. That's the furthest thing from your mind. You're not thinking about your own safety, only the person's safety. It's a split second decision, happening in the blink of an eye.

Leonard Pope is not the first Chiefs player to attempt to rescue someone. Joe Delaney, a running back in the 80's tried to rescue three drowning boys in a pond in Monroe, La. He didn't fare as well as Pope. He managed to save one boy, LeMarkus Holland, but Delaney and the other two boys drowned.

Pope is a good role model for young kids. He's humble and a very caring individual. He definitely is giving back to his community. He cares about children in his hometown of Americus. He has created the C.H.A.M.P.S Foundation which primarily helps young people. Now he's added one more activity to his foundation. Water Safety. He wants all kids in his community to learn how to swim. That's highly commmendable.

Professional athletes have gotten a reputation for being egotistical, and greedy, and self-centered. Whether it's deserved or not that is the general perception of professional athletes. Leonard Pope does not fit that description. More athletes should follow Pope's lead. He's making a difference in his community.

Also, the things an athlete experiences in his or her sport can apply to ordianary people's lives. For example, an athlete can struggle for years trying to reach a goal, like a championship ring. Through hard work and perserverance he reaches his elusive goal. Life can be that way for the ordinary person's life. You chase a dream for many years, through all the heartaches and failures and finally you taste success.

Who knows what's to become of that little boy Bryson Moore. I'm sure he'll remember the day Leonard Pope saved his life. Maybe he'll grow up to become a famous football player himself.
