One Of the Greatest

Every now and then something so outside of the lines happens, so unimaginable that it defies reason, and no matter how it’s spun doesn’t fit into any type of reality you can define. Behaviour that is so abnormal that you have to question foundational values that are set in stone and untouchable. I can remember a few times that touched me to this degree - John Lennon getting shot comes to mind, and the passing of Whitney Houston another. I dont think anything could have prepared me for what happened today.

Fairly normal start, I woke up and spent an hour reading and responding to articles on SA. Nothing new there and actually was blown away by a few of them (Thank you Rob for sharing the way you did), then I threw together a couple outlines - one finishing up the draft and another that delves into that more tender and vulnerable side, another experiment if you will.

After that I pulled together all my notes and started working on some content that needs to be done ASAP. New E-commerce page we are launching next Wednesday (gonna run with an idea from Shawn Lee that I saw on his page, it’s brilliant! Ok more like steal but whatever!) thats coming along really well, but still needs a bunch of tweaking.

About this time, I send out a tweet (just discovered this new, fancy twitter thingy) to a friend that I hang with most afternoons in a chat for the Dolphins called the Finsider’s. I go about my business (taking time to put together some really cool questions to ask that afternoon), when AZ (he lives in Arizona) tweets back that he is having a hard time dealing with the news. What is this fool talking about as I read the tweet again .. ‘Just in shock right now over Junior Seau's death. So sad. :(‘

From all accounts he committed suicide. They say he had some issues with depression and possibly something on a domestic level. In the chat today, the whole idea of post-concussion syndrome was brought up. The media was just starting to get their claws into it and this is going to be a circus. I saw a report with his mother who was completely distraught and could barely stand on her own, doing her best to thank everyone who had reached out with a show of support. All she said over and over was ‘I ask god to take me, but it was too late! I’m shocked … I don’t understand!’

I don’t know this man, have never meet this man, and only knew him by his reputation on the field. By all accounts he was a great leader and the type of teammate you wanted. Awesome attitude and was always there to help whenever it was needed. Several of the people that I respect hold him in rather high esteem and have even gone so far to say he was their hero. He played for 20 years and is widely looked at as a shoe in for the Hall of Fame.

None of this make any sense at all!!! By all accounts he was loved, even beloved in some circle. What could make a person who had success of this kind on level do this? I spent most of the afternoon in a daze, not really understanding why this was affecting me the way it was. I couldn’t even ask any questions in the chat today because they all just seemed to petty.

Then it hit me … I don’t have to nor want to understand, that’s what his inner circle is for. I will remember Junior Seau on my terms, not what the media spins: He was a foe to be respected and always stay wary of for 12 years, then he became a trusted hero for a little while (I still have his jersey), moving on to a hated rival which we all understood but didn’t have to like, and finishing as one of the greatest linebackers to ever play the game.

I think I’ll leave the TV off and MAYBE only listen in to the Finsider’s and not my other sports shows for a while. Who knows .. I might even write another article.

Sad that a troubled soul could not find a way out. We can never really know what goes on, but the more information known about reaching out to those in need the better the future looks, I pray.

Sad ending of a famous player. Oftentimes we don't really know what's going on in their lives. Just when we think they have everything in life (happiness, money, fame, etc.) we hear shocking news. But something tells me that he didn't get the timely help when he needed it the most or maybe he was keeping his problems just to himself.

I just wish the media would leave his family out of it. Truly a tragic event. Suicide is hard to imagine for me so its hard to get my arms around an event like this.

Suicide is such a terrible thing--especially to the survivors--if someone I knew ended his or her life, I would spend forever trying to figure out what part I played. But suicide is very often committed by isolated people who lack the attention and presence of people who might distract them from their spiraling despair--or call 911 afterwards. Further proof that we all need to be loved, and that being famous, being great, being rich, being beautiful, etc. makes little difference to our pursuit of happiness.

That's the disturbing thing though, from the outside he had all of that.
