The fallout from the sexual abuse allegations at Penn State University continues. Mike McQueary, the program's Assistant Coach has now been placed on administrative leave indefinitely. McQueary was the witness to an incident in the shower's on the University's grounds, reporting what he saw to administrators that included the Senior Vice President for Finance and Business, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, the Athletic Director. McQueary also informed then Head Coach Joe Paterno at that time as well. Paterno, a Penn State legend has been fired along with Schultz, Curley and University president Graham Spanier. Schultz and Curley are facing charges of perjury and failure to report; Paterno and Spanier are not being charged with any crime.
McQueary was originally set to coach alongside the interim Head Coach Tom Bradley who had served as the longtime defensive coordinator under Paterno, but acting President Rodney Erickson and the newly named athletic director, Mark Sherburne came to the mutual decision to put McQueary on administrative leave.
At the black and tangled heart of the entire matter lies Jerry Sandusky, former defensive coordinator from 1977-1999. His arrest last weekend brought the long simmering case of sexual abuse and secrets boiling to the surface. Sandusky, currently out on $100,000 bail is facing charges of molesting at least eight boys but may face additional charges, including an alleged victim in Texas.
Spanier, who served as University president was ousted by unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees after he vocally supported Curley and Schultz. Now, a Senior Navy official has announced that Spanier's membership on the Board of Advisers to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey is likely to be discontinued. Members are nominated to serve on that board for four year terms. Before these events, Spanier was due to be reelected.
The students of Penn State University are working to come to grips with what has happened, focusing their attention on the victims now with candlelight vigils and fund raising drives. Acting President Rodney Erickson has said that Saturday's football game against Nebraska will go on as scheduled with heightened security in place. Erickson has urged all students to be on their best behavior as well as to wear blue in support of victims of sexual abuse. He has also urged students and spectators to make donations as well.
One of the victims, speaking through his psychologist has stated that he is shocked by how many people knew what happened but had not come forward.
