Rams Topple Saints Earn First Victory

The New Orleans Saints had a plan to run roughshod over the Rams in St. Louis on Sunday, but then something suddenly happened. The game started. Once the whistle blew it was all Rams, all day long. Perhaps they were inspired by their friends and neighbors, the Cardinals winning the big one, and showing it off in house. Perhaps the Saints counted their chickens long before they hatched.

Steven Jackson led the charge for the previously winless Rams. He carried 25 times for a hefty 159 yards with 2 touchdowns, and added 4 catches for another 32 yards. He owned the Saints defense all day long. Brandon Lloyd, their new number one wideout, also took part by adding 6 catches for 53 yards. A.J. Feeley did a great job today steering them to the victory subbing in for injured starter Sam Bradford.Sam Bradford is out of his walking boot, and looking like he's going to give it a go next weekagainst the hapless Arizona Cardinals.

In a game where they were supposed to roll, Drew Brees could never seem to get anything going. Brees was picked off twice onhis way to throwing for 269yards and twotouchdowns. The ground game was highly disappointing as they were held to a combined 56yards between Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, and recently activated Chris Ivory. Ivory returned to the team after spending the first part of the year on the pup list. The Rams were able to containBrees' favoritetarget Jimmy Grahamas he could only muster 4 catches and 39 yards.

The defense is what I think spurred the team to victory. Chris Long was relentless all day, and piled up three sacks to go along with three solo tackles. James Laurinaitiswas everywhere tackling everybody and ended up with 10 solo tackles and a sack. Darian Stewart finished things off with an interception of Brees late in the game, and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.

It appears that the Rams are happy with Sam Bradford, and don't want anything to do with the mythical "Suck for Luck" sweepstakes. With Bradford coming back and Arizona and Cleveland next up on the schedule, the Rams could start the second half of the season with a bang. They probably aren't catching the division leading 6-1 Niners, but they could be flirting with 5 or 6 wins when all is said and done.

The Saints meanwhile atop the NFC South at 5-3 and have two touch match-ups, a home game against Tampa Bay and on the road in Atlanta. After that they'll get their much needed bye week. Never discount the late season bye, it gives a good team like the Saints time at a critical point in the season to recharge, and heal up any lingering injuries. After the bye four of their six games will be at home, so while their schedule isn't easy, they should be able to navigate it toa 10 win season.
