It's not supposed to look this easy. The way the Houston Texans handled the Tampa Bay Bucs today, on the road, spoke volumes about what this team can achieve this year.
Arian Foster led the way with 186 total yards scoring twice, the first on his second 78 yards reception of the year. He only needed twenty one touches to do all that damage. His backfield mates also got in on the hot running action. Both backups got into the end zone as well, with Ben Tate racking up 63 yards on 13 tries. Derrick Ward, the former number two, scored the other touchdown.
Having been missing Andre Johnson for several weeks now, and winning, the Texans seem to have a winning formula. Run, run, screen pass, run, run, short pass, touchdown. No wide receiver has really stepped up in Johnson's absence, until today. On the first play from scrimmage Jacoby Jones went the distance 80 yards to kick off the points explosion.
Matt Schaub didn't have to do much, but what he did do, he did very well. He threw for two touchdowns and no interceptions, 11-15 for 242 yards. It all looked very easy for this team. When Andre does come back, this team is going to be a real threat for the AFC Super Bowl ticket. The offense isn't the reason that they'll get there though, it's the defense.
New coordinator Wade Phillips has these guys playing out of their collective minds. They made Josh Freeman look like a scared rookie out there today by sacking him four times, pressuring him all day, which led to three interceptions and a recovered fumble. Freeman was held to under 200 yards, only had one TD, and connected on less than 50% of his throws. This wasn't the golden boy that he was last year, not today.
Tampa Bay has been on quite a slide since they beat New Orleans back on October 16th. Since then they've lost three straight starting with their trip to London, and frankly none of the games have even been close. Today, their leading runner and receiver combined for 81 yards. You're not going to win many games in the NFL that way, unless you have "The Savior" running your team from the wishbone. Heading into Green Bay next week, they better get this figured out quickly or they can kiss their post season hopes goodbye.
With the Tennessee Titans also winning today, the Texans go into their bye week with a 1 1/2 game lead. They are fully expecting to get Johnson back the following week when they go back to Florida to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. They sit at 7-3 and they finish the season with three very winnable games against Carolina, Indianapolis, and Tennessee. They should realistically finish with a franchise best 12-4 record, and head into the playoffs with a possible week off for their hard work.
