The Case Against Tony Romo
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

You may not know this, but judging by the title of this article, I am NOT a fan of Tony Romo.  If you are like a lot of my friends on Facebook, you are quick to point out Tony Romo’s statistics.  And the statistics are impressive for Tony Romo, but in the words of George Canning “I can prove anything by statistics but the truth.”  And that is what we have with Tony Romo; he looks great statistically, but the truth is the Cowboys will not win with him as their QB.

Let’s look at some statistics.  And speaking of statistics, some of you may have heard of this quote by Mark Twain: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.”  And when it comes to statistics, as many Tony Romo disciples are prone to throw out, his 2011 QB rating is 101.9, and his lifetime (career) QB rating is 95.6.  That’s good enough to be ranked 4th All Time according to Wikipedia’s NFL Career Passing Leaders page.  But let’s take a further look at this page.  According to the Wikipedia page, Tony Romo ranks ABOVE Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Joe Montana, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger.  If anything jumps out at you, you will see that these are all Super Bowl winning Quarterbacks; as well as, Super Bowl MVP’s and Hall Of Fame (past and future) QB’s.  For the Dallas Cowboy faithful, NFL Hall of Famer, Troy Aikman only ranks 41st All Time, with an 81.6 QB rating.  The bottom line is: What has Tony Romo done in his 6 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys?  Jack and squat!

But let us take a look at another important statistic: Post Season QB rating.  Hall of Famer Troy Aikman’s postseason QB rating jumps up to 10th All Time with an 88.3 rating.  In Tony Romo’s 4 Playoff appearances, in 6 years as a starter, net him a 1-3 record and an 80.8 Quarterback Rating (QBR).  That isn’t very exciting for those who love statistics.

So, here we are.  Its one week after Tony Romo’s miscue, or meltdown (depending on your point of view) against the NY Jets.  And as usual, Tony Romo was pretty darn good, but only for 3 quarters.  It all came apart in the 4th quarter.  Instead of being protective with the lead, he got aggressive.   He not only threw a costly interception in the 4th quarter, he also tried to run the ball up the middle, was sacked, and fumbled the ball.  To me, that’s not the kind of QB you want to lead you into and through the post season.  And what happened in 2008 against the Pittsburgh Steelers?  The Cowboys blow a 13-3 lead headed into the 4th quarter.  With the game tied:  “Romo throws high!  Intercepted! Touchdown, Pittsburgh!”  What else happened within that 2008 season? How about the three turnovers against the Eagles in the playoffs?  What about the one Giant Interception? With the game down to one last play against the NY Giants, it was once again, Tony Romo who throws a costly interception to end the season and their playoff hopes. I’m not going to mention the botched snap against Seattle in the Playoffs.  That was 100% Bill Parcells fault for having his starting QB holding the ball.  After all, fair is fair.

Again, I cannot and will not argue statistics.  Tony Romo is full of them.  Most of them are good.  But in the NFL, it isn’t about statistics.  It’s about a lot of things that I don’t think Tony Romo has:  great play calling or instincts. With the game on the line, you have to ask yourself: do you want Tony Romo as your quarterback?

EPILOGUE:  Week 4 of 2011 NFL Season

Now, here we are in Week 4 of the NFL and the Cowboys are 2-2, after coming off an “epic” 24 point meltdown.  And who do I think is part of that meltdown?  You guessed it, Tony Romo.  How do you throw 3 interceptions when you have a 24 point lead?  Why does Tony Romo throw into double coverage, down the middle of the field?  I honestly believe he has the poorest decision making ability of any QB in the NFL.  Cowboy fans, listen up, this BLOWN LEAD is the biggest, read: BIGGEST, blown lead in the Cowboys 52 years!

In the game against the 49ers, he had 5 failed 3rd down conversions.  He threw into double coverage, nearly being intercepted again in the 2nd quarter with 2 min left.  Before Romo left with a fractured rib and tear in his lung, SF was up 14-0.  Once Jon Kitna comes in, Dallas ties the game.  Romo showed a lot of heart and “moxie” in coming back, but the following week, the Cowboys barely hang on for a Field Goal-laden victory.  Now, in week 4, they blow a 24 point lead, with two interceptions returned for touchdowns.  Last season, under Kitna, the Cowboys were 5-3.  This year, under Romo, the Cowboys are 2-2.  The bottom line is this:  in the two losses this season, Romo has 5 turnovers that have led to 31 points: four interceptions for two TD’s, and a goal-line fumble.  With that kind of point differential, how can expect to win?  Again I ask you, with the game on the line, do you want Tony Romo as your quarterback? Is it time to relook at Kitna?
