In 1996 Houston Oiler fans were heartbroken to find out that their home team for over thirty years was getting moved to Tennessee. After moving the team two things happened, the Tennessee Titans were born and Houston was left without a football team for the next six years! When those six years came to an end, a man named Bob McNair decided that six years was to long for Houston to go without a professional football team.....and POOF, the Houston Texans were born.
When the Houston Texans started their season there were many people, like myself, who believed that the Texans were going to be a breath of fresh air to the NFL. Nine seasons later, the Texans have done nothing more than disappoint, for the most part. Five out of the nine seasons the Texans placed fourth place in the AFC South, placed third place three times, placed second once, and have yet to place first as well as find a spot in the playoffs.
Even though the Texans have had a hard time winning games and being consistent, they have gradually gotten better. Take the Texans 2010 season for instance. They had a solid, and I mean very solid offense, with Matt Schaub leading the passing game, Andre Johnson leading the receiving game, and the new addition of a free agent named Arian Foster leading not just our running game as well as the entire league in rushing yards. Besides these three players being pro bowlers, the Texans have a few other players who are all pro bowlers and future pro bowl contenders such as, Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans, and Brian Cushing.
What hindered the Texans from being part of the the 2010 playoffs was their defense. Even though the defense has a few pro bowl players, it lacked experience, consistency, and coaching. But not anymore. Head Coach Gary Kubiak made some off season additions and changes which included hiring Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator, five defensive players from draft picks, and signing of young cornerback Johnathan Josheph; which is a big help, due to fact that the corners were horrendous last year. With these much needed changes, the Houston Texans are very big playoff contenders. They are also ready to give the Indianapolis Colts a run for their money for first place in the AFC South.
The 2011 Houston Texans have come a long way from when they started. They now have a strong offense, an improving defense, and a newly acquired coaching staff. With these changes the Houston Texans are finally going to make it to the playoffs and win back the fans they lost as well as make new fans. And hopefully in a few years win a superbowl, something not even the form Houston Oilers could not do.
