If you are looking to own a business, a franchise business has many advantages, not the least of which is the higher chance for success. But that doesn't mean everyone who wants to own a business should buy a franchise. Franchises are not for everyone, and we will take a look at things to consider before choosing to buy a franchise.
Restrictions. One of the main reasons not to buy a franchise is the restrictions that are placed on the franchisee. When buying a franchise, you are buying into a certain business model that has been shown to succeed. But this also means that you have to follow that system if you want to be a part of the franchise. For those with entrepreneurial spirits, these restrictions on how they can run their business might be a reason to look elsewhere. If you like to do everything your way and have complete control over your success or failure, then buying a franchise is not right for you.
Franchise Fees and Royalties. Another common reason why some people do not choose a franchise is the fees, both the initial franchise fees and the ongoing royalty fees. "Why should I give my hard-earned money to some corporation?" seems to be the mantra. So if you are the type that does not want to pay any fees, then you should not choose a franchise. It is important to realize, however, what these fees are paying for. With the franchise and royalty fees, you are getting the rights to use the brand name and the customer loyalty that comes with that, and you are getting the training and support from the franchisor to help you succeed. It is therefore important to determine exactly what the fees are paying for and if they will provide a good return on investment.
Support. I mentioned in the previous paragraph that one of the things you get with the franchise fees is training and support. But sometimes you hear from franchisees that they are not receiving enough support and are therefore struggling in their businesses. This is not so much a reason to not choose a franchise as it is a reason to thoroughly check out any franchise you might be interested in. Talk to other franchisees before you commit and find out if they are happy with the level of support provided by the franchisor. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.
Finding a franchise that meets your needs can be a long process. There are consultants who can help you in choosing a franchise, but they may also help you discover if you are the type of person who will be happy in a franchise. Not everyone has the personality, but for those who want to be their own boss while not having to go at it alone, then buying a franchise can be the perfect opportunity.
