Furniture is Fashion, Reclaimed Wood is the Future

Furniture is an integral part of every home. It’s not just functional; it’s part of your lifestyle and the way your home look directly reflects who you are. Styling and design is personal, but not nearly as personal as the choice of materials. Metal for instance often dictates a cold character as opposed to warm which is warm. Reclaimed wooden furniture is a clear advancement over that of cheaper alternative woods. Making best use of reclaimed materials directly shows people just how much you care about the environment and the stigma surrounded recycling is a much more heavily weighted factor in modern living.

Reclaiming wood for furniture is a natural development away from logging trees to create furniture. Logging has hit extremely bad press in recent times, and the severity of the situation has come to light in more recent time. Reclaiming allows the usage of wood that has historically been logged, and so the effects upon the planet are much less profound. Whilst it is also a much more preferential type of wood to use in terms of appearance, it’s also practical to make use of it. Not just in environmental recycling terms. The wood is of a better quality for the most part. The wood has had to stand the test of time and as a result becomes stronger as it dries. Of course this is not true for all types of wood, and only some become better over time, but woods such as teak which is becoming a much more popular wood in modern times excels with age. It takes on different colours and becomes harder over time. It in many terms is a much better wood once is has been used over time. Newly cut wood doesn’t share the same features, appearances and is not environmentally friendly.

Weathering of the wood and the time its spent in the air drying make all the difference. For wood that has been used outdoor, these factors are super important. Weathered wood is tougher, stronger and more durable than new wood. Woods such as Grade A teak have protective oils inside them, so over time once weathering occurs, they become a lot more resilient to the elements within which they are in. Not only does it become a better wood to use it frequently possesses an even more rustic feel to it and additionally is terms of design provides excellent appealing features in furniture. This rustic feel creates great distinction to the countless factory produced ‘flat packed’ furniture seen in contemporary life.

Reclaimed wood furniture is eco-friendly. And that’s the long story short. De-forestation needs to stop and whilst controls have been put in place, FSC standards for instance, little is actually actively done outside its jurisdiction to stop logging. In parts of the world such an Indonesia, there are little legal controls to stop logging, and it resorts to methods similar to hired guns on elephant backs. The issue is still ripe, so making best use of reclaimed wood furniture within our homes seems like the best way to actually ensure that there is still a future for the generations to come.

Like every brand-new trend, indeed there are those wanting to abuse its position in our society and make a living out of this abuse of position. For instance not having the right stamps on their reclaimed wood furniture and claiming it’s something it isn’t. If a company can’t prove how an item has been sourced then there should be questions raised as to the source and reliability of the products that they are trying to sell to the public.

Furniture is the latest fashion item; it’s an extension of your life and directly reflects you as a person. Reclaimed wood furniture is the future in terms of designer furniture. The world needs saving, and it can’t be done without eco and sustainable considerations.
