Best Soil for Tomatoes Australia

The best soil for Tomatoes is one of the most important things to start with for growing great Tomatoes. After picking a good location that will get sunshine all day if possible and away from shade trees, prepare your garden site in the off season if you can however just before the planting season is OK too.

  • LOCATION-Pick a location where something, even grass has grown before, so the ground is not too hard. Even weeds are not a problem but if the ground is rocky or very hard you would have a lot to remove and then build up with topsoil.
  • PREPARE THE SPACE- After picking the location for the Tomato garden, measure off and mark the corners and edges and start digging. You can do it by hand or better yet with a tiller which can be rented from a tool center. Sometimes if your garden is large enough and you live in a rural area ask a farmer if he can plow it for you. Either way till it several times criss-crossing. Try to go a little deeper with each pass. If your soil is very heavy or has a lot of clay you will have to dig as much as possible and improve the depth a little each year. Then hoe it out to remove anything even small stones or anything that would keep you from making it a smooth.
  • SOIL TEST-It is not mandatory but always recommended that you have your soil tested. Soil test kits are available at a garden store or a college agricultural division in your Territory of Australia. It will tell you if the soil is too alkaline or acidic which can be adjusted or if it needs Calcium which is essential for great Tomatoes.
  • SOIL TEXTURE-If soil is very FINE- you will have to add something to add texture to it such as grass clippings that have been chopped up( do not use if treated with a pesticide), sawdust, ashes or other soil
  • If Soil is VERY HEAVY you will have to add some thing to it to break up the particles such as Sand or other soil and some organic matter. If you need Calcium this is a good time to add some powdered lime ..
  • IF your Soil is a VERY RICH and LOOSE- . Just add some organic matter as you plant or as a mulch.

All soil can be improved into the best soil for tomato plants.

In the off season, each year after removing any dead plants and raking out the area I add some powdered lime and then cover it with leaves and mulch the garden area at least 1 foot high. I also add some organic matter such as cow manure in between layers of leaves.. All of that makes a compost pile for the next growing season. It will help to re energize the Tomato garden soil and makes it more workable in the spring or when you plant for the new growing season when.

Take care of your soil .It will make your Tomatoes happier.

  • Good luck with your Tomatoes.
