Build A Small Garden Shed

Now that you have made the decision to build a garden shed you have the opportunity to use the material of your choice. You should use good quality lumber that is pre-treated that way your shed will last for years. This is a simple to follow plan to build a small garden shed that will be very helpful if you follow it properly don't take any short cuts or leave anything out. Shall we begin?

First start your garden shed with the floor using 3 x 2in joists set at about 12in centers for extra rigidity. Notch the joist ends to accept 2 x 1in cross battens that will keep the joists squire while you add the floor decking. This can be tongued and grooved boards, plywood or roofing grade chipboard nailed to the joists. When completed set frame in place on its base using strips of roofing felt under the joists to keep the damp at bay.

Now the time to make the four walls panels to the dimensions of 3 x 2in timber with vertical studs at about 18in centers and a horizontal rail half way up each panel for strength. Joints are simple halving joints glued then screwed together. Position door and window frame members to suit the sizes of the off the shelf door and window. End walls have integral gables with the rafters notched into tops of the studs.

When the garden shed wall frames are complete stand two adjacent frames in position on the edge of the floor and cramp them together. Drill two holes through both the corner posts about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way up. Bolt the two frames together using carriage bolts do the same with other panels to complete the garden shed frame.

Next up fix the remaining rafters which are simply nailed to the tops of the side wall frame and start attaching the wall cladding. Cover the end walls first working from the bottom upwards and cutting the pieces so they finish flush with the face of the side wall frames. Clad these next, letting the cladding overlap the cut ends of the cladding on the end walls to protect its vulnerable end grain from water penetration treat with preservative once in place.

Up next is the garden shed roof cut and fit two panels of exterior grade plywood or chipboard screwing each panel to the rafters at 12in intervals. Lay the first strip of roofing felt in position taking it over the ridge of the roof if it is wide enough, and fix it with galvanized clout nails. Lay the second strip on the other side of the roof slope, again bringing it over the ridge so it overlaps the first piece.

On wider roofs the felt will not reach from eaves to ridge in this situation lay a third strip along the ridge so it overlaps two lengths lower down the roof slopes. Cut the felt at the corners of the roof and fold and tack the overlaps down neatly. Turn the lower edges of the felt over the edges of the roof boards, tack them and fit a fascia board. Fit a gable end cut from wide board or exterior grade plywood then finish off by glazing the window, hanging the door and applying an overall coat of preservative to your small garden shed.
