How to Grow Vegetables In Your Front Yard

A lot of people restrict their gardening activities to their back yards or balconies. However, if you have a lot of space in front of your house, you can make use of it. Turn it in to your own vegetable garden. You might think it will look ridiculous with tomatoes and cucumbers, but you can manage to pull it off. Just follow these front yard gardening rules:

Looks Matter so Try to be Attractive

Even when it comes to vegetable gardens, looks matter. When you decide to grow zucchini of eggplants in your front yard, don’t forget that you won’t be the only one to see them. Your neighbours might be against it. They may even complain to the local authorities. They may even make you take your front yard garden down. Some people may even go further and destroy your precious garden beds. On the other hand, if your plants look nice and tidy, your neghbours won’t mind it. They may even decide to join you.

Stay Polite and Friendly

If you’re the people in your neighbourhood like you, they will like your front yard garden too. It’s not like you need to be BFFs with the couple next door, but you can show some politeness. Always say “Hello”. Ask the folks how they feel. Small talks about the weather. Just the usual friendly conversations. You can even show your neighbours your patio vegetable garden. Ask them about their opinion. You know what they say – treat other people like you want them to treat you.

Share Your Harvest

When the veggies in front of your house start to bear fruits, you can share them with the people around you. You can give them some of your tasty, sun kissed tomatoes, or offer them some squash. Your neighbours will be delighted and will have a chance to appreciate the advantage of having a front yard garden. Just remember that if they are also gardeners, don’t give them the same things they have. You won’t like it is someone offers you cucumbers when you’re tired of eating them every day.

Sharing your organic crops can be a great way to promote patio gardening. You can even make your neighbours pick it up and grow their own veggies right under their windows. You can even make your own community garden, who knows.

Keep Things Clean and Fresh

Remember what we talked about being tidy and attractive? When you have your back yard garden, you can sprawl your gardening gear all over the place. You can have small piles of debris and weeds, ready to be thrown away. However, you can’t do the same in front of your house. Front yard vegetable gardening is all about clean and tidy. Keep the patio garden beds neat and organised. Imagine that instead of tomatoes, you are growing beautiful flowers. You can’t see any dirty tools or big stick around them, right? Your yard should look the same.

The other thing is that when you grow fruits and veggies in your front yard, the folks next door will see them all the time. You need to present them with a nice view, instead of overgrown, bushy and neglected plants. When the vegetables in your lawn look great your gain your neighbour’s support.

Exterminate All Weeds and Unhealthy Plants

It’s all about them looks. This should be the whole theme of your front yard veggie garden. It might look gorgeous and neat. But all of this won’t matter if you have eyesores creeping between your amazing beans or peas plants. Weeds are the number one unwanted garden guest. Together with pests and diseases, they can make all your hard work go to waste. Get your rubber gloves and home-made weed and insect killer and get to action. Eradicate all these annoying little aphids and uninvited plants. The garden in front of your house should look clean and pest-free.

Don’t forget that sometimes veggies can look ugly too. Gardeners around Oxford remind you that plants catch different diseases or die in the hot summer. Your patio can seem neglected if you don’t take care of these problems. Prevent the spread of diseases, remove dead plants, and keep everything under control.

Think Outside of the Box

Some people are torn between the idea of a lawn with freshly cut grass and having their own front yard garden. If you are one of them, here’s a solution for you. You can keep the green grass and still grow your own vegetables right in front of your home. How is that possible? Use pots and containers. They are not only for flowers. You can grow tomatoes in buckets and potatoes in sacks. This will keep your new garden organized while you enjoy your lawn. Oh, and you can move the containers around the yard and re-arrange them.

Time to Experiment

You can always try something new and break the gardening rules. You can try different methods in your patio vegetable garden. There are a lot of gardening forums where you can find inspiration and information. You can grow vegetables that aren’t mean to be grown in containers. See what happens. Maybe you will be a pilgrim in new front yard gardening techniques. Let your imagination run wild and try new things.

Plant for Each Season

Make a planting calendar and grow vegetables for each season. Don’t restrict your gardening activities only to summer. Sure, there is enough sun light, water, and dirt, but you can take full advantage of your front lawn. There are a lot of plants that grow fast and other that you can enjoy even in the winter. With the right conditions and care, you can enjoy fresh veggies through out the whole year.

Think About Pollination

If you want the vegetables in your front yard to have proper pollination, you need to do something about it. You can use your lawn for its initial purpose – grow flowers. Plant some beautiful blooms in front of your home. Their aroma and enchanting blossoms will attract bees, butterflies, and other insects that aid pollination. Your vegetables will be happy, and your garden will look even more beautiful with the busy wild life.

Stand Your Ground

Always be ready to defend your garden. A lot of people will be against you if you grow vegetables in your front yard. You need to be ready to explain the benefits of growing your own produce. You can even ask your gardening friends to back you up. Remember that there could always be someone complaining about your front yard gardening activities. Be prepared and stand your grounds if such times come.
