30 DAY CHALLENGE

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”

– Ernest Hemingway

It's hard to believe that this challenge has come to an end. Throughout this process on how to start a vegetable garden, we have learned from beginning to end the things that are important in order for your garden to grow.

Garden Design. Without considering all of the factors your garden will not be a success. Things to consider: sunlight, space, garden type (raised bed, container, ground), and companion planting.

Materials. This is where your budget comes in. The types of materials you use and how you obtain them depends on your budget. You will need seeds or seedlings, soil, fertilizers, pest deterrents, and perhaps materials to build new beds or containers.

Seeds. We learned a lot about how to start seeds. Some start better outdoors (melons for example), others are best started early indoors for an earlier harvest (peppers and tomatoes for example).

Seedlings. We learned the proper way to harden off seedling and how to transplant seedlings into bigger pots for your garden. This a crucial step for gardening success.

Fertilizer. There are a lot of different fertilizers out there. We discussed some organic methods in the 30 Day Challenge and I've discussed other options on my Garden Journal Blog. I have more fertilizer information I'm working on and will be publishing to my blog soon, so stay tuned!

Pest Deterrents. We discussed some great organic ways to deter pests. I've also suggested a few new ideas for organic animal deterrents on my blog.

Pollination. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are important to our garden. We discussed why they are important and how to attract them (use flowers) to our garden.

Water Conservation. Setting up ways to save water for your garden is important and we discussed a few ideas for this.

THANK YOU

I have enjoyed this journey and have learned a lot. The gardening season is only half over, so please continue to follow me through my RSS feed or on my blog. I will continue to provide updates on my garden there as well as new things I learn along the way.

Thank you for following me on my 30 Day Challenge: How to Start a Vegetable Garden.
