Pergolas Add Pizzazz

A sure way to dramatically transform your backyard into a special space is by adding a pergola. Pergolas are permanent open, airy structures with vertical posts and crossbeams, usually with a flat top. They are related to the gazebo, however pergolas are more often rectangular or square in shape.

You'll find most pergolas will not keep you dry in a rainstorm, but that's not their job. This open, breezy structure is an architectural feature that helps define your outdoor space. It can serve as a frame to drape showy climbing vines such as wisteria, clematis or climbing roses for a spectacular garden showpiece. A long skinny pergola provides the perfect framework for a fountain or sculpture. A pergola can also line a walkway or cover a garden bench. It is perfect for poolside shade or as a privacy screen by the hot tub or jacuzzi. It not only defines your space, a vine covered pergola can protect you from the harsh sun or nosy neighbors.

One of the most beneficial uses of the pergola is to delineate an outdoor sitting room, creating more living space and added value to your home. This is more cost-efficient than adding a sun room or screened porch. Many pergolas are designed to be self-supporting and can be placed on existing brick and stone patios or on wooden decks. Some pergolas are even supplied with electrical features such as ceiling fans, speakers and retractable awning covers to keep your seating area comfortable in all varieties of weather.

Another fine feature of the pergola is its height. It allows you to grow your garden vertically providing another layer for your garden palette. The pergola also serves as a great spot for hanging flower baskets, garden tea lights or lanterns. If your pergola is on a deck or patio, huge planters can be placed near the posts for trailing vines.

Pergolas can be crafted from many materials such as wood, stone, wrought iron and vinyl resin. Redwood, teak and cedar are the most commonly used woods since these varieties handle the weather better than other woods. If you do select a wood pergola, consider treating it with a protective layer or two of polyurethane to keep it looking new.

Pergolas extend your living space and dramatically transform your yard. This airy structure can create a gorgeous focal point for your garden, define an outdoor eating area or provide the perfect spot to train a resplendent climbing rose.

I used to sell these things back in the day. I have seen people do some cool things with them but in my opinion they look the best in the garden or lining a walk way.
