Growing a vegetable organic garden isn't really the hard work that you think it is. In fact,if you do it the right way, it can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. You'll be able to prepare much healthier meals for your family without really changing your diet. Eating organically grown food (grown without using harmful chemicals or pesticides) can lessen the risk of things like heart disease and high blood pressure and organically grown food tastes so much better and will last longer when stored as well.

When you get into vegetable organic gardening, growing your own vegetables, fruits and flowers is very satisfying and it saves you the time and money of going to buy them at the grocery store. Gardening can be even more fun if you get the whole family involved. Each family member can choose one thing to plant, tend to and harvest. You could make up stories and adventures for your kids that include the planting, tending and harvesting of the garden. Kids will be more likely to want to eat fresh fruits and vegetables if they've grown them themselves! Growing organically has quite a few benefits like knowing your food doesn't contain harmful chemicals, cleaning up the soil and the air, saving gas by not having to go to the grocery store as often, saving money because store bought food is getting more expensive every day, and the list goes on and on!

Add pizazz to a meat dish or pizza with fresh herbs. Make a glass of iced tea more refreshing by adding a sprig of fresh mint. Imagine a bed of crisp salad greens tossed with firm juicy tomatoes, brightly colored peppers and garnished with fresh radish roses and celery curls. You could even decorate a wedding cake with fresh flowers that your guests can eat and have the guests say "Ooohh! Aaaahh!" My mother decorated my sister's wedding cake with fresh orange blossoms and all the guests said that it was much prettier and more unique than anything they had seen in a store!

You can create a beautiful organic garden of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Plant them in your back yard, on your patio or on your balcony. You can plant in pots, jars, barrels,an old boot, a kids wagon, whatever suits your fancy.Vegetables, herbs and flowers can all be planted in the same area or in separate pots so you can rearrange them whenever you choose. Another great thing about potted gardens is that if you move to a new home, your lovely organic garden can move with you!

If you never knew that you could really eat flowers, or if you just don't know which ones to use, check out the great web page called "Edible Flowers" by Lynn Rawe. Ms. Rawe is a Horticulture Agent with Texas Cooperative Extension in Bexar County. Here is just a "taste" of the flowers that you'll find on her list:

"Rose petals add a delicate, sweet flavor to many dishes. The petals can be used in sorbets, fruit salads, teas and desserts. The stronger the fragrance, the stronger the flavor will be."

"Pansies are used as a candied flower to decorate cakes. The sweet flavor can be used in desserts and drinks. Pansies grow in a rainbow of colors. Freeze them in ice trays and float the ice cubes in your favorite drink."

"Scented geraniums have a variety of smells. Each smell will carry that same flavor. There are fragrances of rose, lemon, chocolate, and apple, to name only a few. The flowers are usually small but are heavily scented."

Ms Rawe has a whole list of flowers that that could dress up any fresh organic vegetable dish, make soups and drinks look fancy, and even decorate your daughters' wedding cake! And don't forget, it's very "posh" to have edible flowers on your fancy dinner or wedding table.

Ms.Fox is an organic gardener and she tells you step by step how to become an organic gardener yourself. The link is in my Author Bio area.

My adult son loves gardening. He has some minor mental disabilities that make it difficult for him to complete tasks. When he gardens, he can do it a little at a time and still see it through to the harvest. When he ate the potatoes that he grew himself, he was pretty excited and immediately wanted to plant another one! He leaves a potato on the counter until the "eyes" start to grow. Then he cuts it in half and plants each half in a large pot with regular potting soil and waters them "really good" about every other day. When the plants that grow die off, he digs up his potatoes. He usually gets 3 or 4 about the size of a child's fist from each pot. That may not seem like much, but it makes him happy! My son doesn't need "adventures" any more but it did help him to learn to love gardening. If you would like to do that for your kids but your imagination is stuck in low gear, I've written an article to help get you started. Please visit my article called Adventure Gardening and have a blast with your family!

Thank you Andrew! It interests me too and somehow I never picture dumping poisonous chemicals onto my growing food when I think of having a garden!

This article talks good sense. It is not hard work to have a plot going. I have 11 pole plot and it takes me about 2-3 hours a week; summer and winter. The secret is to get on top of it and stay there.
