Handcrafted pens are literally unique.
With these pens the possibilities are unlimited since the materials could be pretty much anything an artisan wants to work with.
The most popular handcrafted pens are made from all sorts of wood. But it is not difficult to find pens made from pheasant feathers or rattlesnake skin.
Quill pens are also available. These ones are made from feathers of a large bird, usually goose.
The fabrication procedures are numerous, but for wooden pens it is more or less standard. The wood is selected and then lathed. Subsequently, the wood is sanded many times with finer grits of sandpaper. Finally, various coats of finish are applied to protect the wood which is later polished to a mirror-like shine.
Since no material looks the same in nature, not two pens will ever look the same. This is especially true with wood and this is why people like it so much.
Refills are easy to get. Most handcrafted pens use commercial refills like Parker, Cross, Schmidt, etc.
In a good handcrafted pen the external components, like the clip and the nozzle, will show a gold or chrome finish coating.
Prices range from 3 to 5 dollars for a cheap wooden or crystal rhinestone pen, while a good ballpoint pen will range from 44 to 240 dollars depending on the material (e.g. type of wood) and the fabrication procedure.
Is it worth the investment? It depends on each customer. I personally think a good handcrafted pen is definitively worth it as long as you take good care of it.
These pens are made so that they can endure a certain amount of hard abuse for years and years, but one has to be very careful not to lose it. Imagine losing a 300 dollar pen at the front desk of your dentist office or while signing a receipt in a supermarket.
A handcrafted pen will be a great choice when giving a gift to business associates. They are also great for all sorts of events like weddings, baptisms, among others.
In my opinion, a handcrafted pen is more of an exhibition artifact. I mean, in the end it is an artisans work of art.
Thanks to the internet one can find numerous companies and independent artisans from all over the world that create incredible and sometimes extravagant models.
It is difficult to give a concise review of a handcrafted pen since there are so many and each one is so different. The only parameters one can have to give an honest opinion about their performance are probably the material, fabrication procedure and ball pen refills.
If you want a unique ballpoint pen that can literally make a statement both to the eye and on paper a handcrafted pen is the one you want. Give yourself the time to choose the model that suits your personality and needs. Also, don't forget that even though the pen might look amazing, the writing experience could not be as good.
