The Kindle Fire pre-order figures appear to be going off like a rocket.
Even though it does not go on sale until the 15th November 2011, its preorder figures are said to be running at around 50,000 per day. What is really amazing is that this is the case, even though the iPad has way more features. It seems as if Amazon might have done it again and made just the product that the market wants.
It is well accepted by most of us that the tablet will be one of the biggest hits of this Christmas season in stores. What is interesting, is that sales of this product could mean that many more people will be shopping online in future.
For those who find the cell phone too small for accessing the internet and the PC too fixed to impulse buy, this little machine with its 7 inch screen could well fill the gap.
The price makes it a shoe-in as a Christmas gift and many people will be happy to treat themselves at that price too.
Just consider this: see a product in a shop window, pull out the Kindle Fire and check the price online at Amazon. Given the possibility of free shipping, the shopping malls could lose a lot of sales, it is simply too convenient to use for e-shopping.
It is expected that around 24 million tablets will be bought in 2011, of which 3 million could be Amazon Kindle Fires. This will herd customers towards Amazon's digital content, as well as to its other offers. New Kindle Fire customers will be certain to take advantage of all the special perks offered to them.
Amazon does not reveal its actual sales figures, but it has said that by December 2010 it was selling more electronic (ebooks) than paper books.
Here are some of the technical details of this new product.
It has a 7 inch color multi-touch display, with IPS technology and a
resolution of 1024 x 600. With 8GB internal storage, it runs on the well-established Android operating system, from Google. It weighs in at only 413 grams and the price will be $199.
Of course, it has access to Amazon's app store, streaming movies and TV shows, in addition to all of Kindle's e-books.
A close rival could be Barnes & Noble’s 'Nook Color', but this largely focuses on book and magazine reading. Also, the Kindle Fire undercuts the Nook product by $50, while of course also being very much cheaper than tablets from Apple, Samsung, Motorola etc.
It looks to me as though Amazon will fulfill their chief executive Jeff Bezos’ words. He is quoted as saying: "These are premium products at non premium prices. We are going to sell millions of them."
At the moment who can doubt that the Amazon Kindle Fire will make a considerable impact on the market for these multi-purpose mini computers.
