Ordinary ballpoint pens depend on gravity for the ink to flow properly and be able to spread the ink on a piece of paper.
You might believe that gravity should not be a problem as long as you stay on Earth, right? Wrong.
Take for example paramedics, construction personnel, police officers, special forces, or surgeons. All of them need to write in whatever angle and position the situation allows. Not only so, they need a pen that can withstand a lot of abuse, work independently of temperature, and be capable of writing on any surface imaginable.
If your job consists of sitting in front of a desk, the problems you might face could be a little different. Gravity works on your favor. Yes. But still there are tons of pens out there that leak, skip and clog. Many of them are just way to big to carry them in your pocket. Many of them are too thin, or too thick. Or just ugly.
The Space Pen Refill
In 1965 Paul Fisher patented the Space Pen refill consisting of a pressurized gas cartridge. So, instead of relying on gravity to do the job, Fisher Space Pens use nitrogen gas that pushes a float that pushes the ink to a roller ball made of tungsten carbide.
So, gravity is out of the way.
What about the ink?
Fisher Space Pens use a special type of ink called thixotropic, a kind of semisolid ink that becomes liquid by contact with the rolling ball. This characteristic allows the pen to work in a large range of temperatures (-30F to 250F).
These pens can easily write on different kinds of surfaces: Oily, glossy, skin.
Some people claim that these pens can even write on soap.
Designs
Fisher Space Pens come in various designs: Bullet, AG7, Trekker, X-Mark, Cap-O-Matic, and many more. Each and everyone of them focused on satisfying specific requirements from its users.
Despite having so many models, all Fisher Space Pens share the same principle: They use the same type of pressurized gas refill and the same kind of ink.
Conclusion
Fisher Pen users around the world agree that these pens do what they claim they do without a fail.
I have used Fisher Space Pens for quite some time now. I must say they are one of a kind.
In the end, it is all about writing. It does not matter if you just take notes, write pages and pages of your next novel, or just record an entry in your diary, a space pen will never let you down.
If you want to improve your writing, these pens will certainly help. More than you think.
