Announcing Your New Year\'s Resolution May Or May Not Lead to Success

New Year's resolutions are like a promise you make to yourself, or are they? Do you stand a bigger chance of success if you tell everyone what they are or if you keep completely silent about what you want to achieve? Is there a third option, a happy medium to those two extremes that will work best? It is likely that there is no one best answer to that question, it may be a matter of personal preference.

According to studies, some dating back to the late 1920's, discussing your resolutions and long term goals can actually be a detriment in some cases. For some people, voicing their intended plans can serve as a type of "social reward" where they get positive feedback simply for saying that they plan to do something positive. Every time that they mention it, they trigger this sense of reward and eventually, the brain is tricked into believing that something has actually been accomplished. That leads to talking about the goals, on Facebook, Twitter and in person, sometimes constantly. For some people, that is enough. They like the thrill of "starting" a new goal, the initial rush of talking about it and getting all of the attention that such a plan may bring, but they lack the follow through. For those people, silence may be the key to actually making realistic changes to their life, no matter what their actual goal might be.

For others, not talking about their plans, especially weight loss or fitness goals, may give them free reign to change or quit at will. If they do not mention that they are trying to lose five pounds, for instance, then they may believe that no one is paying attention if they eat a second piece of birthday cake. For those people, announcing the resolution might be the key: giving them a built in accountability and keeping them on track. They are more motivated to stick with the resolution for longer simply because they may fear the humiliation of giving up or worse, failing.

Celebrities frequently make such announcements and must suffer the public ridicule and derision if they fail, viewed under the microscope of public opinion where every single move is analyzed. Jessica Simpson, due to give birth to her first child in spring has reportedly signed a three million dollar deal with weight loss giant, Weight Watchers to drop the pregnancy weight after she has the baby.

Great points as we all know what it's like to face criticism from those who aren't making positive changes. There's one saying that tells about the person pointing the finger at you - has three more pointed back at them.

It all comes down to which works for your own personality- obviously if you are a known flake, it won't matter if you start something and then bail on it, so telling people will not make a difference. I say, if people know what you are trying to do, you are less likely to just quit easily.

To be honest I can't ever remember making a New Years resolution. For me it's a load of junk but I agree with the sentiments expressed in your article.
