Barriers to Goal Setting

Are you one of those people who talks about setting goals but then fails to do so? If you are, you’re not alone. But have you ever really thought about what stops you? Perhaps it’s because you don’t think goal setting really works or perhaps you just think it’s waste of time and you're better off just getting on with your life, or pehaps it's just a question of laziness. These reasons are all barriers to goal setting but there are many more. However, the good news is that whatever your reason is, it won't be insurmountable. You need to identify and acknowledge any barriers and then decide what actions you will take to overcome them

Listed below are 5 examples of barriers to goal setting.

1. Lack of knowledge

A big barrier to goal setting is a lack of knowledge about goals and the process of goal setting. There isn’t just one method of goal setting – there are quite a few and you have to find out what works for you. The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Related) method of goal setting is one of the most common methods around and it can be used for setting short, mid or long term goals.

2. Lack of commitment

There really is no point in even setting goals if you’re not really committed to them. It’s an obvious barrier to the success of achieving your goals, but it’s one that people tend to ignore. Achieving your goals are often challenging, things go wrong, you may have to adopt new habits or learn new skills, you may have to sacrifice something to achieve them ... Unless you recognise this from the outset and accept that you’re committed to make any necessary changes – don’t start.

3. Fear of change

Most people have experienced occasions when the fear of change has stopped them taking action, whether it may be a new job, getting fit, moving house, ending a bad relationship, relocating overseas ... If fear of change is acting as a barrier to you doing any goal setting, think about the affect of not making any change and the impact it will have on your future.

4. Over confidence

Oh yes over-confidence can be as much as a barrier to goal setting as fear of change. Lots of people refuse to do any goal setting simply because they believe it's unnecessary and that they achieve just as much success as people who have clear goals and take action. If you’re a sceptic – why not make the commitment to have a proper go and see what difference it makes. There is plenty of evidence to show that people who set goals are far more successful than those who don't.

5. Lack of self-belief

If you have any issues regarding belief in yourself , this can easily act as a barrier to goal setting, because if you’ve failed to achieve goals in the past you may believe you just don’t have what it takes to set them and achieve them. Kick any negative self-talk into touch. You have what it takes, but it’s up to you to decide that you want to enough and give it another go.

Summary

There are many more examples of barriers to goal setting than the five I have mentioned above, but none should ever stop you from giving it another go or trying for the first time. Goal setting works and can make a tremendous difference to your life. If you’ve been letting barriers get in the way of your goal setting, look honestly at what they are and make the decision to see how you can overcome them. Find a method that works for you whether it’s the SMART method of goal setting or another method. Make sure you ignore your inner critic, decide that you’re really committed to do what it takes to achieve your goals, take the action and success will be yours.

Glad I stumbled upon your article, Beverly. I am in the midst of launching a new on-line business....Going from a 'brick and mortar' wellness center to an online presence. In figuring out all the nuts and bolts of setting up the website; adding content; adding images, etc, it is easy to forget the foundational things....like goal setting. Thanks for the reminder.

I can relate to the 'over confidence' at this stage. It's not an arrogance but rather a belief that I know where I'm going. I know 'all' about goal setting and yet this is a good reminder for me not to take for granted the direction I'm heading. Thanks again for your excellent knowledge.

Really interesting article and I think you have broken it down well. I can relate to all 5 of those points. In particular I have found inactivity for me is caused by lack of knowledge or clearly defining the parametres of what I want to achieve. Only when I nail down exactly what I want to achieve and how the action steps will be do I move from dreamer to achiever :)

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I think a lot of people struggle with setting parameters and yet without them success will always be limited.

Thanks Kevin. You're absolutely right. People are afraid to step outside their comfort zone. I think we've all been there at one time or another.
