Creating Clearly Defined Goals

What is the difference between a wish and a goal? I wish is something that you fantasize about having someday, somehow. A goal is something that you wish for, along with a plan to make it happen. The first step to making the transition from wish to goal is to get a very clear picture of what it is you really want.

The first step to creating a clearly defined goal is reflection. What do you really want to achieve? That may sound simplistic, but unless you spend some time thinking about this you will waste a lot of precious goal-achieving energy. For example, you may have a goal of paying cash for a new sports car. What would that mean to you? Would it mean increased self-esteem? Would it mean more respect from your friends? Would it mean a hotter girlfriend? Or, are you a car enthusiast who thoroughly appreciates a maximum performing driving machine and would love to be able to indulge in that every day. If your true motive is to boost your self-esteem, gain respect, or attract a potential mate, then working your tail off to pay cash for a sports car may not be the most efficient way to meet your goal and you may want to redefine your goal. However, if having a high-performance car would indeed dramatically improve your life in a deeply meaningful way, then you are on the right track.

The second step to creating a clearly defined goal is research. Studying your goal will help you to refine your expectations and intentions. You are going to want to have a crystal clear picture of exactly what you want to achieve. Spend some time getting to know your goal in intimate detail. This may mean subscribing to trade journals, joining an enthusiast club, watching documentaries or YouTube videos. If your goal is on the simpler side, you may want to consider creating a vision board. This is a poster board where you can attach images or text relating to your goal. You would keep it where you could see it every day. If your goal is more on the complex side, you may want to keep a binder, box, or computer file for collecting your research, and set aside ten minutes a day to spend with your goal.

Warning: Beware of procrastination. It might dress itself up and look like research. You still need to plan how to get from where you are, to where you are going, and put that plan into action. That is much more effective than wishing.
