Do You Have Desires Or Goals?

Ultimately, the difference between desires and goals is a matter of perception.

Wishes are things that people would like to have, be or do, yet they think are impossible to normally get; they believe the accomplishment of their wishes could only come from a fortunate event which is beyond their control.

On the other hand, goals are desires that people feel that they can achieve. They can see themselves having, being or doing what they wish and they know that, taking some specific steps, they can get them.

In general, when thinking or talking about their desires people are conditioned to establish a clear boundary between what is achievable or not.

When asked where they see themselves in five years or ten years’ time, they start forecasting their future from the point where they currently are. They infer what could be possible for them to achieve starting from what they are doing, having or being now.

In this way, they unconsciously limit their personal evolution and continue to dive into a feeling of frustration for not living the life they wished to.

A desire becomes a goal when the person starts to believe that this is achievable.

Pushing the limit between what we believe to be or not achievable, is possible for any of us.

To be able to set ourselves higher targets, we have to:

  • - Stretch our imagination
  • - Commit to extend our comfort zone.

We have to start by asking ourselves one single question: ‘Why not?’

In this way we challenge all the reasons we might have in demonstrating why we cannot achieve certain things.

This is a very effective method:

Write on a paper a list with all your wishes (things you believe you have no chance to achieve) and then write for each wish the reasons why it is impossible for you to accomplish it.

Anytime you encounter a limit, put the question: why not?

This is a very powerful exercise. You’ll also have fun doing it.

All your limiting beliefs will surface one by one showing you what exactly prevents you from becoming really successful in your life.

The findings may surprise you.

Keep in mind that all the beliefs you were conditioned by education or by your own experiences to acquire from your early ages can definitely be changed. We really have the power to transform our wishes in goals.

Success is not a lucky circumstance in peoples’ lives.

Living a fulfilled life is a just target anyone can commit to provided that she constantly makes some specific actions to reach it. It is finally nothing else than a personal engagement.
